Check out the latest issue if you're passing WH Smith....
Front cover by Corporal Steve Wood the guy I took over from here in Lash (and whose cameras I'm now using - thanks Steve for leaving the SU800 set to 'close-up' and not leaving me a manual...lol)...this was Steve's first job since leaving the Defence School of Photography earlier this year...

Just to illustrate what we're producing in-theatre these days...and the competition I'm up against...the jammy [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER]...:D

Strange, someone left a copy of this in our canteen at work. Great pic and an interesting magazine if somewhat unusual to find it in a car factory. Although thinking about it we do have a few ex-servicemen.

Thanks for the link Rob.

Had a read of the online version of the mag and in the books review section the name of an author stood out (Ken Wharton) because we share the same surname.

His book is an account of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and focuses mainly on The Bogside, Ballymurhphy, Turf Lodge and South Armagh.

As a 7 year old English kid for some reason my parents decided to move from Fulham to Ballymurhpy in West Belfast right at the height of the Troubles around 1977. All my dad's family are from the area and still live there but for my mum, brother and myself it was a nightmare because of our West London accents.

Thankfully now Northern Ireland is rebuilding itself and apart from a few eejits who only have the support from a minute fraction of the population things are looking up. We moved away from Belfast around '78 to Craigavon in Co Armagh which is heaven compared to West Belfast although we have had our fair share of trouble here ( PC Stephen Carroll was murdered about 100 yards from my house earlier this year a few days after the two soldiers at Massereene Barracks).

The book (Bullets, Bombs And Cups Of Tea) looks interesting and I for one will be buying a copy

Founds the book here on Amazon

Well that's taken up a couple hours of my Sunday morning. Thanks for the link. Brought back loads of memories.

Is it the photograph of the soldier sitting down? Reminds me of the shot that won last years World Press Photo Prize, taken by Tim Hetherington.

Actually, now that I look at the large picture, it's not that similar. But it's still a good shot.

yep - all nicely set-up with three SB900's and an SU800 commander...

Not quite 'Coming off Patrol' then - I've seen the archive - he took photos of the whole section in the same pose for thier facebook profiles...lol

The bale of Soldiers landed on my desk this week and the first thing that struck me was how awesome that image is. Can't put a finger on why I love it so much, but it's fantastic.

Got any jobs going Arkady? :D

Pop down to HQ Land and ask Shane Wilkinson the dep Picture Editor...apparently hardly anyone left can deploy, so until we get some more coming through the school, there's only about five of us doing all this now...lol

I have a guilty confession...once I'd finished screaming and swearing at REDDOT for tonight I actually had a look at the RLC page...until I get promoted a couple of times I don't meet the criteria. Being P3 won't help either

Looking for fresh meat? Sounds good!

Always - I'll be out next year so another slot opens up...the catch is that you have to be in the Army already and have served a minimum of five years in a front-line deployable role...
Used to be that you had to serve in Teeth Arms but that's been relaxed a bit as we weren't getting the calibre of photographers we need and there are some very good amateur phots working as unofficial Unit Photographers in the other departments of the Armed Forces...

I'm really out then...CAMus aren't classed as front-line deployable, or at least not as far as I'm aware.

b****r. Oh well, looks like 2 transfers then

OT : :

There is a movie called , They were soldiers with Mel Gibson which is awesome and it has a photographer in the front lines. Thought you might like to check it out :p

You know you want it...:D

I had the paperwork filled in and signed this time last year...was going for a transfer to REME as an armourer. My Bandmaster talked me out of it. Why did I let him?!

Noooooooooo, we need more armourers!
I went for the RLC phot role, had an issue on the BPFA (couldnt breathe) got back to germany (with a good report from Matt T, told to try again soonest) to discover downgraded for asthma, doh!
went REME Armourer instead, and am the unofficial official unit phot wherever I end up!

Still gutted though, it would have been my dream job- now upgraded again but with only 6 yrs left no point in transferring again!

It's called We Were Soldiers ;) Underrated movie. I loved it. The photographer in it is the same dude that played the sniper in Saving Private Ryan.

Horrible Film - Mel Gibson re-writes History once again...omitting one of the major characters involved becuase he was British - Ric Rescorla from Cornwall...who later died in the Twin Towers on 9-11...

Please read the book "We Were Soldiers Once - and Young" by Lt Col Hal Moore and Joe Galloway (the photographer) that the film is loosely based on - the movie 'stops' halfway through the events portrayed in the book and certainly isn't the heroic victory that Gibson paints...
