New windows 7 computer arrived this morning, easy transfer cable should arrive tomorrow. New computer working great, so thought I'd wait until tomorrow to transfer my data. In the meantime I thought I'd start setting up Photoshop, etc no problems. I have Dreamweaver CS3 on my old PC, but can only download the upgrade to cs5 for quite a few quid. b****r that I thought I'd use the old pc to do some searching to find cs3. Plus I thought I might as well run a virus scan before I start the data transfer. Just updating the virus database when the old PC resets and now refuses to boot problem with the boot.ini and hal.dll being corrupt. Spent a few hours trying everything but still dead.

Oh well now I have the huge job of trying to remember all my logins and passwords. Especially for our home business web site - missus ain't pleased. Got to find all my email details first. But it was all archived on the old machine via outlook. Still working on it but managed to get to cPanel for the web site, which means I can sleep tonight.

Anyway now looking at setting up an email program, wtf no outlook only ms web mail.

Anyway rant over, back to work - I hate computers.:gag:
 
Get a caddy for the hard drive from the old machine, or install it as a second drive in the new one and you should be able to access your files that way.
 
Cheers Steep, will try that in the morning. Will have a look at a caddy first before I start trying to install a second drive. Do you need to reconfigure pins somewhere to use as secondary?
 
Cheers Yv, still at it, managed to get my email accounts sorted. Still to sort out ODBC drivers and my database connections - tomorrow methinks, I'm off to bed.
 
You shouldn't need to change anything on the drive to use it in a caddy m8.
 
ah i had that on a friends machine not so long ago.. its something to do with updating to IE8, done that recently by any chance?

basically what you have to do, boot from the xp disk into recovery console and run the command/util to repair startup. then it will boot, go into windows and uninstall IE8.

appears to be a bug no idea why it only happens on some machines, IE8 went on perfect on my old XP box..
 
Cheers Hugh & Neil, will try installing the harddisk later today. Neil, unfortunately it's a bit more serious than that, no IE8 and repair can't fix it. I don't have an XP system disk. I do have a recovery disk but that doesn't fix it either. If I have problems installing the hard disk in my W7 box I might try eBay for an XP system disk. Thanks guys. Will post with results.
