Yes
Its my daughters sports day today at her nursery, she's just turned 4. I've just bought a canon 450d with kit lens and I need some pointers.

Is it just a case of putting it into 'sports' mode and shooting? Can the flash be sync'd to the continuous shooting mode?

I've seen a couple of photos which I love where the subject is running and the people behind and infront are out of focus. I'm guessing that may be much easier with a fast long lens, and there I may struggle with mykit lens.

The weather is overcast at the moment so I guess my dream photo maybe harder to get!!

Any ponters/ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Pete

If I were you and I was trying for the selective focus effect, I would set the camera to aperture priority (AV) and set it the the maximum aperture possible. That will give you the best chance of getting the effect you are after I would think.

Also select AI servo, with your centre AF point selected, this will keep you in focus when she is moving towards you And don't forget to get down to her level.

Thanks for the tip guys. Unfortunately due to the summer weather we're having it had to be called off - too wet!!

I'll have to save my award winning shot until next year at her first primary school sports day!!

Doh. Some advice for the future though- check with the school or nursery if it is ok for you to take pictures. Parents and schools can be very funy about you pointing your camera at the kids due to various paranoid issues.

But the ICO has said that schools that 'ban' photography have interpreted the law incorrectly.

Not an issue I want to argue, but rightly or wrongly some people are very uncomfortable with the idea. Asking first could save a whole lot of headaches later.

Last year there was an announcement before sports day to all the parents to ask if any objected. It was done just before the first race, so I think if anyone had said anything they would have been run out of town!! Most parents had a camera with them!!

Obviously if someone objects then it could be an issue but jeez isn't it all going a bit far?!!!!
