Some ideas for a good quality compact.

I have a friend who is about to go and work abroad for a voluntary organisation for a year, and he has asked me for advice on taking a compact camera along to document the whole thing.

Unfortunately I'm a little out of touch, and haven't got a whole lot of ideas.

He is wanting to spend around £100-120 and isn't averse to a good condition second hand one so suggestions for second hand also welcome.

So far the Sony W690 and Canon 220HS have been seen, and he prefers the Canon.

He will be in a hot and dusty environment, possibly only having intermittent electricity to recharge (or at best only every evening), he is not waiting to spend much more due to the worry of theft or the harsh environment killing the camera.

Anyone have any suggestions for better image quality than the Canon, at a similar price and size?

I just picked up a Canon S90 for £85. Superb little camera. His budget would get a good one and might even stretch to an S95 which is the S90's replacement and has a few improvements. Highly recommended.

Did you get it on the forum Graham?

I had a look through the classifieds and didn't see many compacts listed.

Here's few to think about.....all are fairly well reviewed!!

My wife has one these, and it's great: http://www.parkcameras.com/18419/Canon-IXUS-310-HS---Silver.html?referrer=CamPriceBust

If he wants a bigger zoom: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B006Q8VAR2/letscook/ref=nosim

Waterproof, shockproof etc: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0076YAF8A/letscook/ref=nosim

But I have to agree with the above, the S95 is a lovely piece of kit.....if you can find one in budget!!

I watched eBay for a few months until a bargain came along. Plenty go around the £100 mark though. They don't have many of the gimmicks and huge mp if some of the latest compacts but they do have a large sensor and a good lens so deliver very good iq.

How about something like the canon d10?
Not the latest and greatest but waterproof so will keep the dust out better.

Dust proof sounds good, but it needs to be slim enough to pocket carry, from the pics the D10 looks a little "portly".

Thanks, will start keeping an eye on eBay, I'll pop a wanted ad on here as well for one.
