It's not surprising - anyone can be a photographer these days - I mean - look at us lot. All you need is a decent camera, half an eye and a bit of tatty chop know-how.

It's what happens as technology becomes more and more accessible.

If I was local I would drop em an email about it for summer work, 6 pound an hour is morrissons money and I would have th opp to play with portraiture more.

What they aren't gonna get is a pro tog, they'll get someone at the foot of the ladder

Its like every thing else - grinds down to the lowest denominator, and scrapes the bottom of the barrel

I happen to be a qualified Optician - I gave up that game when de-regulation meant I was responsible for a bunch of (very recently) checkout girls, and I was answerable to a ex manager of a sofa factory, and competing for jobs agianst mobile salemen

I'm seeing double Richard!
"Doctor, doctor, I keep seeing spots!"

"Have you seen an optician?"

"No, just spots."

All comes back to supply and demand. I doubt they're looking for the next David Bailey, just someone to operate a camera. Hours looks like it would be good for a part time student as well.

Yes, it has happened (or is in the process of happening) to almost everything. It's the way of the world I'm afraid. I think they call it 'Disruptive technology'. It does provide as many opportunities as it takes away though. So not all bad.

all be it wanting to get into the industry they can KMA if they think im getting out of bed for that sort of money for week and weekend work with a qualification.

To be honest, 6 pound an hour is more than most of us on here are paid to take photos!

And don't forget, if you took the job, you'd be a pro (ie earning the majority of your income from photography)

I'd do it. Better than putting up with god awful customers who have problems with their camera because they haven't taken it off of automatic.
But then I have no photographic qualifications.
But it is likely that I have more technical knowledge than a degree student who gets taught theory over functionality.

just done a google on the company.. makeover 2000.

Offer makeover as free/cheap prize. Then hard sell photo albums when you getthere.

Not that uncommon that business model...

I've seen some shocking results from them, photographically and "makeover" too...

In the current climate I dont think its a bad thing. There are alot of people out of work at the moment so this could be a way someones hobby could get them back into work. As its been said, more and more people are getting into the photography so the salaries related to it will also drop as they arent in as much demand. Im commenting on the quality of the togs work but with portraits it doesnt seem to matter to the customer.

My ex has had some studio pics done with her family and my little boy and personally they are horrid. They are over exposed for one, its been purposefully done but they are all technically wrong.

My husband has qualifications in his industry and he would jump at the chance to get £6 an hour at the moment having been made redundant 2 months ago.

£6 is better than nothing and for nearly £200 a week, it pays gas bills, water bills, etc etc. Sometimes you just have to suck in your pride and think, Hmmmm, £6 an hour and I'm highly qualified but have no current income, I'll take it thanks.

What is the minimum wage?

But thats largely true of most non-photographers viewings of photos... they look at the subject and not at the photo itself. "Oh wow its a Porsche!" or "you have a photo of Bon Jovi!", they don't care that its crap...

Its only us lot that look at what we have taken and go "blurgh!" and hit the delete button.

From the Hm Revenue & Customs website:

There are three levels of minimum wage, and the rates from 1 October 2008 are:

  • £5.73 per hour for workers aged 22 years and older
  • A development rate of £4.77 per hour for workers aged 18-21 inclusive
  • £3.53 per hour for all workers under the age of 18, who are no longer of compulsory school age

6.00 a hour is more than the majority of agency photographers are on.
13 grand a year is not uncommon with work 7 days a week and 18+ hour days common.
