Yes
Is this a cleaner of some sort, as when I turn it on it makes a loud noise?

Thanks
Vicky

A loud booming noise? or a repetitive mouse squeak?

Does it go away when you turn off the image stabiliser?

The cleaner (or dust reduction system) will make a noise when turned off according to a couple of websites i've read. Not sure what would be making a noise when turning on..

Perhaps the in body image stabilization is calibrating?

Yes, it's normal.

The lens is reset to infinity at power on, and the the other noise is the anti-shake platform moving into place.

Double check that with your SuperSteadyShot switch set to On, that in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder you have a set of bars that move from 1 bar to 5 bars depending on camera movement (confirms SSS is working)

It will give the sensor a quick 'shake' (high frequency) as part of the power on to remove dust on the sensor.
You sort of ignore it after a few times - I would classify it as noticeable, but not intrusive, if that makes sense.

Yeah I thought it may be this, but just wanted to double check, as I am having other problems with it, to do with the sensor alignment :bang:

it was weird when I first got it too. plus the eye detection auto focuss start or something . oh ! eye start AF - cool thing, but at the first I didn't understand what was going on.

Hehe it that the seizure like flashing? As I posted a thread about that yesterday too! Lol

sensor alignment can be knocked off by an anti-shake failure.

If you find that your image framing is off (for examples images are much higher or lower down in the final image than your viewfinder framing), it will need service ("roller" part needs replacing).

Sony UK can do it easily.
