Sony A200 or Nikon D60?

No
I'm looking at buying my first DSLR and was wondering whether it's worth stretching an extra £50ish for the D60 over the A200...

Now i'm guessing it's gonna be a lot of you can't compare these camera's kinda comments, so any suggestions for around the £300ish mark?

The A200 kit with 18-70 lens if £254, can get the D60 with 18-55 lens for £309ish... or with the VR lens (which apparently is the way to go for £335)

Or the D40 for £250ish, but the D60 and A200 seemed more comparable in specs.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, had a quick search and couldn't really find too much comparing these two.

Dont bother with the d60 and get the d40 cheaper.

Although I have a sony a 200 and I couldn't recommend it more highly.

bottom line, these are all great cameras that have all the features you want in your first dslr!!

Forget about the specs, unless you know you will be printing billboard size anytime soon 6mp will be fine.

I'd suggest looking around used, you could pick up some great stuff for your budget.

Having said that, I have handled both of the cameras you mention and found the Sony to feel far cheaper than the Nikon.

My money would go on the Nikon (body only) and an 18-70mm (used) - the difference between the quality of that lens and the kit ones is noticeable.

Cheers,
James

I've been looking around the for sale section, but keep missing out on stuff, looking too late after they're posted.

Been offered a D70 body for £200, reckon i should get that and look for an 18-70 lens for it then?

You need to be careful with a D70 as they had a tendancy to die without warning, (the infamous BLGOD ~ Blinking Green Light of Death) but they are good old cameras otherwise.

As ryank says, the D40 is probably a better bet than a D60, or even perhaps a D40x, as these are being cleared , having been replaced by the D60, so can be picked up for similar money to the D40.

The Sony looks like a lot of camera for the money, so it's worth a look, but obviously the Nikons will offer the chance of picking up cheaper, secondhand quality glass.

Another camera to have a look at now that prices are dropping is the Nikon D80, it'll still cost you a bit more than a D60, but you'll be ale to grow your photography much further with that than a D60

ive got to admit, im a complete noob when it comes to photography, i took delivery of my new sony a200 yesterday and i am very pleased with it.

thats about as much as i can say...cause its all i know!!!

the sony is alot of camera for the price, never heard a bad word about them yet, and the kit lens is pretty good! i love mine!!:D

It's a better D40 and something I'm aiming for but I am VERY pleased with my D40. Incidentally , I'm using a Sigma 18 - 200 OS lens now and the difference that these movement prevention systems make (like VR) is amazing with hand held shots. It's what persauded me to keep the Sigma on my camera even though the Nikon lenses (non VR) are brilliant otherwise. Mick. Incidentally,
again! it's my birthday in november (73) and if you would like to club together, I'd like an Ariel Atom !!

The Nikons good VFM, so it's worth a look, but obviously the Sony's will offer the chance of picking up cheaper, secondhand quality Minolta glass.

Go and hold them and buy the one you feel mopst comfortable with.
