Sony A450 or Canon 450D?

Looking at these 2 from looking the sony looks much better, and also sony have cheaper lenses, what are your views on which is better an for what reason?
im narrowing my choice down to these 2 now. the only down fall for the sony is it dont have a live view.
 
Don't forget you're buying into a system so you also need to see what lenses and other accesories the manufacturers have, for this reason i would go for Canon all day long.

Also there is a magazine for Canon users so camera help is easier.
 
Pesonally I'd go with Canon, better build quality and the lenses I wanted (like the 55-250mm in your other thread). However the Sony does have a better spec. on paper. It does have live view, but only for manual focus.
 
the lenses for the sony seem cheaper though? is the live view only in mf mode??
hmm sorry i meant the sony A500.
oh and i cant find the canon 450 with body and standard lens, so dont know what to do, im looking at spending say £450 on the camera with standard lens any recommendations.
 
You need to think about both the short and long term.

There is an argument that Canon has a larger range of lenses, but unless you are looking to collect lenses (and have deep pockets) then you will only actually ever buy a few of them.
You will probably find you can get all the ones you want for the Sony system (the main gaps are Tilt/Shift and long primes, both of which are expensive).

On the other hand, you are more likely to find your local photography store has Canon gear, etc, simply based on market share.

It is worth going into a store and seeing how the two feel in your hands, as differences in size and layout may make them feel different, and one may be 'right' and the other 'wrong' when you hold them.

PS: There are several web forum dedicated to Sony / Minolta, which will provide much more instant help than a magazine...

Don't forget the Sony has IS built into the body.. this means every lens you use will be stabilised. :)
 
i am leaning towards the sony as my oh also has a sony so we could share lenses, i wont be buying loads of lenses either.
does the live view on the a500 only work in mf?
does anyone have a link to these sony forums?
also the sony has a better spec than the canon, hmm its all pointing towards the sony atm.

Yup the A500 does full live view. Pesonally would still go with Canon, which I did!
 
Always a plus point if your OH has Sony and the fact you can 'borrow' lenses! Sounds like you have made up your mind :D

I'm selling my 450d to fund the 550d which looks awesome on paper and reports are really good.
 
The A500 is about £429 plus £80 cashback from Sony. So £350 delivered right now.


Can't comment on what is better... but you can get the A500 with a lens, for less than an A450.
 
Having only played with Sony DSLR but seriously looked into the Canon/Nikon bunch, for me having every lens stabilised, good supply of old yet high quality minolta lenses and a bunch of other stuff like 5/7 fps, manual focus live view really make Sony my winner. I was tempted by the 550D for its HD recording etc, but it's unlikely I'll use that at all really.

At the end of the day it's what feels best in your hands, and does the stuff that you will find useful.

With no endless arguments about weddings ;). Obviously the forum traffic is considerably lower than here.
