Hi All
I have a sony alpha a300 with a twin lens pack. A sony kit lens upto about 70. And a tamron 75-300.

Unfortunately i have stripped a gear in the kit lens. Jessops qouted 200 pounds to fix it, so its just not viable to repair and is scrap.

so my question is what to replace it with?

like for like is an option. but i wondered wether this is a good time to get better glass by buying a used sony/minolta lens.

jessops offered me a 50mm prime for 130 which i thought was good for an f2.8 lens, but would i miss the zoom.

do i need zoom from 18 to 70 to cover all situations.

thanks for your help.

do i need zoom from 18 to 70 to cover all situations.

Only you can answer that, as you know what you shoot, we don't!

Consider buying the newer 18-55 kit lens if you want to replace the 18-70.

Thanks Leaky 5

that s a great result if it goes for that money on the minolta.

I will also look into the dyxum range.

would the minolta be an upgrade on the glass from my sony kit lens.

cheers

Your main choices for kit lens replacement are:

18-55 Sam (new kit lens)

Tamron 17-50

CZ 16-80

Sony 16-105

By far the cheapest will be the 18-55, and it does appear to get good reviews. The others are excellent by all accounts, with the Tamron having the advantage of the constant 2.8 aperture, and is the cheapest new, although it has the most limited range. I have just picked up a 2nd hand 16-105, and I am extremely happy with it so far. I will be selling my Minolta 35-105 if you are interested, although it is the later non-metal version (not as renowned as the early version, but still miles ahead of the 18-70 kit)

There are offerings from Sigma, but I have never looked into them, due to the wildly varying reports of their quality control.:)

Hi

thanks all. I dont think purchasing a new kit lens is the answer for me,better to upgrade.

but would the tamron really be an upgrade? and like you say limited on zoom.

cheers
