Heard on another forum that Sony are rumoured to be working on the A1000 30mp DSLR ... all singing all dancing jobbie .. also that they want to fight for domination of the DSLR market ..

hmmm 30mp FF ... would be nice ... :)

anyone heard anything .. ?

Yes, but the files created by these monsters just keep getting bigger and bigger..

I've upgraded to the 5D mk II - a mere 21 mp - and now my 2gb CF cards aren't big enough :'( Also I used to archive my pics on to CD-R, but not a lot of point when files are 25mb each.. using DVD+R's now.

Sony should spend some of its R&D money on creating a new file compression algorithm

Why wouldn't they? But you can bet Canon, Nikon et al are working on exactly the same too.

I would not be surprised to see 60mp DSLR's in the shops by the time of the London Olympics. Actually that would be a good event for Nikon to launch a D4x 100+ megapixel behemoth....

Or by making bigger flash cards and cheaper hard drives.

Storage is a problem though. I found a 8 or 9 year old Fuji Processing Lab 'Images to CD' disc the other day. It won't read on any computer we've got here. Newish and an old PC and a Macbook.

So those pictures are efficiently 'lost'. :( Actually, in that case, I have the negs filed somewhere - but that is not the case for any 'digital' images. I have backups - but they are in the same house, on electronic media. Not entirely secure.

I was listening to TWIP yesterday, and they really hit the ‘nail on the head’ with their off the wall comments.

There is a rumour that Nikon are working on a D4x which will be a higher specification than the D3x, higher resolution; Probably HD Video; etc
The big joke obviously was that camera design is a continuous cycle, meaning that Nikon obviously are going to be at least starting pre-work on a D4x (or the successor to the D3x) even before the D3x was released, and no Bookmaker will take any bets against these rumours. Yes they are very probably true, but it has the same probability that I will have to pay tax on my income next year.

From the Sony camp there has been talk of two new FF dSLRs, but until they are released, or at least a firm release date is known; then it’s hard to get excited about them. Just as a point of note, Sony first showed the a900 something like 18 months before they actually released the product, and we are still waiting to find out what that huge telephoto prime is: 500/4 | 600/4.5 etc as I’m sure that was also shown around the same time as when the first a900 was known about.

I’m pretty sure that these two Sony FF dSLR specs, first started off as a wish list from someone at Dyxum (there is a thread over there on a similar subject), and these specs just seem to be doing a continual loop around the forums and rumour sites.
In fact I’m sure that they have been doing around for such a long time, that there is chance that someone from the Sony development team read the specs, and have had enough time to develop a camera to meet the rumour. LOL

Still only be as good as the glass you put on the front though. Honestly what benefit is there to 30mp camera
At what point is too much - too much?

I guess once you have it you don't want to go 'backwards' and suspect that although we are already at the point of bigger is not 'better' for most people this will not stifle demand.

Sorry what I meant was I cant see (guessing that it will have a massive price tag) the benefit of a 30mp camera, Will we see all the A900 users going 'oh no time for an upgrade now as I want an extra 5.4 MP?.

Just my two pence worth.

Prices fall. The 'first' digital SLR (Kodak DCS 100) cost @£20,000 and had a massive 1.3mp.

Some will, of course. Others, who have waited will got straight to that and Canon and Nikon users will wait for their own versions.

Bit surprised at that - what format are the pics in? Do they have a file extension? Can you see the files on the CD - is it a normal ISO format?

Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro should be able to cope with just about any graphics format on the planet. Just to put it in perspective, I have a couple of graphics files in TGA (Targa Graphics) format which were produced by AutoCAD for DOS back in 1994! Photoshop opens them no problem.

None of that. It's a media problem.

I can't read the disk.

Ah, it sounded like it was a file format problem :bonk:

Yeah, CD-Rs aren't the most robust media around, although I think the dyes now are more stable than they were when your photo CD was made.

Surprisingly, archiving on to tape might be the most resilient format, although you have to count on there being the hardware/software available to read the tape in 20+ years..

i'd rather have better dynamic range and iso flexibility than shed loads of megapixels tbh :)

Sony keep on pushing don't they, and good on them for it. Nikon and Canon have such a massive grip on the market that they need keeping on their toes.

Sony is also attacking them at the bottom with really good value cameras like the A200, and hitting the top with flagship 'halo' products that might not sell many, but get talked about in the right way. It's going to be a long haul for them, but they seem to be rather good at making sensors (don't they make them for Nikon?) and have big resources.

If you take the pixel density of the Canon 50D it equates to roughly 40mp on full frame, so it seems do-able. And while people say enough pixels thank you, what we really means is more pixels please, but not with increased noise and higher cost. Can we have a better balance, but with each model we seem to be getting a bit more of everything these days such is the pace of development.

Then there is another new path being lead by Panasonic, and now the Olympus E-P1, soon to be joined by Samsung - the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera based around 4/3rds format.
