Sony RX100 problem

Yes
When they first came out, I bought an RX100 - it was amazing, best compact I ever had. Then one day, it stopped working. It was just dead - tried everything i could think of but no joy. Mourned it, threw it away, moved on.

After a while I spotted a bargain mark 1 on eBay so I bought it. Decent condition etc etc. Worked fine. Then one day (really not long after I bought it) it stopped working.

Thinking hard about it, the last thing I remember doing with both cameras is plugging them into a particular USB wire that is running off a powered hub on my desk to charge the battery. They both died in exactly the same way. The coincidence is too much for me.

Anybody hear of anything similar? Google hasn't. Any thoughts on whether the one I didn't throw away can be resurrected?

To save some questions....it's a long white USB lead that I use with lots of stuff. It sits on my desk and I plug in whatever I need. It's running off an Anker 7 port USB3 powered hub that works fine.

I've got a mk1 too, but have never plugged it in as you describe. I charge the batteries outside of the camera, could it be just a fubar'd battery?

I have several batteries because I've owned 2 of these cameras ;) The others don't work either.

Can only charge in camera because Sony didn't give me a charger either time.

Was worth trying to exclude an easy one, assuming all batteries haven't been charged in the same way - i.e. in camera via the white usb lead ...

When I bought mine I got an external charger too, though I bought used.

Yeah, I did wonder about getting a charger. It's possible that something on the charging circuit has blown and all the batteries are currently flat. Actually, that's one of the more likely things it could be.

If you lived closer I could of leant you the charger for my MKIII to try before you buy one to make sure it works.

Thanks - that's kind of you. Looks like I can get one from Honkers for a scarily cheap £2:18. Got to be worth a punt.

If you could get hold of a charged battery and see if it works then it would eliminate one thing ... or maybe do you have or know anyone with a test meter (one that does DC voltage)? that would at least indicate roughly what state the batteries are in. I think I'm too far away to easily lend one to you.

That's a shame. Other than checking the contacts in the camera are clean I'm out of ideas - sorry. It sounds like maybe an overload when charging, if so not good news :(

Yep - that's what I'm guessing. An expensive mistake. Especially the second time.

Kicking myself I didn't keep the original one I bought new - I'd approach Sony about some sort of goodwill gesture given that all I did was plug it into a hub. Same cable on same hub charges phone, running lights and other stuff and runs a removable HD when I need it to.

It's extremely unlikely to be the lead, so I guess it must be the supply. Anker is a pretty decent brand and I use one of theirs to charge my RX100 and RX100m4 without issues. Does the hub have any special features which detect which connected devices can take 10W as opposed to 5W? There may be something faulty there, or your particular unit may have issues. Either way, sorry to hear your camera died. The RX100 is amazing and when my RX100 was stolen on holiday it was sorely missed!

AFAIK there's nothing "smart" about the hub. It's a cheap (for Anker) 7 port USB3. I'm wondering if there's something dumb in the Sony RX100 that causes it to draw more current than it can handle.

I've used the same lead in the same socket to charge/power many other devices.

Will it charge via a laptop or do you have a USB mains plug you could try?

Blown a fuse inside, happened on my 40D, called it a DC to DC board, but its basically a fuse
