Sorry another 40D or 50D question

Hi- hoping to make my mind up today- I'm upgrading to an xxD, is the 50D really worth the extra over the 40D? I don't shoot birds etc from a long way off and hardly ever crop so the extra pixels don't bother me, but I really like the sound of the better screen and MA on the 50D, but dont know if they justify a couple of hundred extra £££

I'm really after more fps, better AF and a better built body than my 400D, can you please vote to help me decide?!!!

With the brighter screen- the only trouble I have with the 400D is on bright days at the track I struggle to see what I have taken- but no major issue- can you ever see proper detail until it is back home on the computer screen?!

edit- of course there is couple of hundred more £££ to spend on lenses and put towards my 17-55 with a cheaper body...

sorry 1 other question- will either of these bodies AF faster than my 400D in poor light or is it completely down to the lens?

I had the exact same dilemna a month or so ago but upgrading from a 1000D, and I decided to go for a used 40D. Managed to get one for £410 with warranty remaining and also some extras. I didn't think the 50D was enough of an upgrade from the 40D to be worth the extra £££, especially since upgrading from a smaller cheaper body to the 40D will be a big step up already.

I also invested in a 17-55mm f/2.8, and if you don't already have one, I really recommend putting the money saved on the body towards the lens because it makes a lot more difference than a body would. The constant f/2.8 is awesome.

Just my thoughts and experience.
 
Get the 17-55, just got my grubby mitts on a s/hand one and its great

Been considering a 50D, but so glad i bought the lens instead, using it on my 500D and best image quality I have ever managed
 
If you can afford the 50D, then go for it, if the extra money means you can get a lens you otherwise wouldn't be able to afford, then possibly the 40D would be the better choice. I recently sold my 300mm lens, so I'm down to 200mm and cropping a little, and the extra MP are a bonus. The low-light ability is awesome too, shooting as ISO 3200 with nothing at all to worry about is a godsend sometimes (It's just about possibly to get usable ones at 6400, a LOT of processing is required for 12800 to be much use though!).

If you have a lot of lenses prone to back/front focussing, the 50D also has microadjustment which might be a big bonus and save you cash on calibrations costs too!
 
I'm really tempted to just get a 40D, but I dont want to have it for 6 months and want to upgrade. So maybe a bit more on a 50D would be wise.. :shrug:

Does the micro adjustment make that much difference or literally just shift the focal plane back/forth half an inch when using a really large aperture?

Any macro I do is done with a manual focus lens and macro is the only time I get a very clear plane of focus, normal everyday shooting is usually between f/4 and f/11 (ish), or am I getting it all wrong?!!
 
To be honest, even if you pay the extra and get a 50D....you'd probably want to upgrade to either a 7D or a 5D at some point anyway, if you ever did a future upgrade. I doubt there would be any point in upgrading from a 40D to a 50D........this is how I saw it, so you might as well save a bit now because the 40D is a massive upgrade from your current body anyway.

It's not a myth... I did a few tests a while ago and found I got less noisy results from my 40D than from the 50D and the 40D is also a little better in low light too.

Here's a quote from DPreview to back it up:

"...We're by no means saying the 50Ds image quality is bad but it's simply not significantly better than the ten megapixel 40D. In some areas such as dynamic range and high ISO performance it's actually worse and that simply makes you wonder if the EOS 50D could have been an (even) better camera if its sensor had a slightly more moderate resolution..."

I would think that the advantages of the 50d would pay off once they get the noise sorted out. that said, i never really bonded with my 50, i much prefer the new 7d
 
Nice one on the 40D, I'm sure you will like it. I'm really enjoying my 40D but I've found that lenses make a much bigger difference. With the cash you saved, go grab that 17-55 ;)
 
This is gonna take some getting used to! The shutter sounds so lazy compared to my 400D :lol:

Is it also wrong to say I actually quite miss the full screen display of settings like the 400 on the rear instead of the lcd screen at the top- and why did I think the ISO went higher than 1600? Not that I'd use it anyway!

And finally (I know I will read the answer in the manual when I get time) but in live view there is no AF- correct?
 
is the shutter quieter than the 400d? I'm thinking about the 40d as my next camera. How's the viewfinder compared to the 400? Noise? Full comparison please:geek:

Hi,

The shutter on the 40D is most definitely quieter than the 400D (although the 400D isn't exactly noisy). The viewfinder is noticeably brighter and larger on the 40D as well. :)

ISO performance is very good on both cameras although once again, the 40D is better.

You certainly won't regret buying one.

I had a 40D which I sold to fund for 5D but couldn't find a good deal that time so I went for a 50D.

50D -
Better LCD screen - allows you to judge easily if your shot was in focus - with the 40D its very difficult
50% more mp - allows more room for cropping than 40D
Microfocus adjustment - saves you time and money (this feature alone IMHO is worth the upgrade from 40D)
Noise issue - I am happily using ISO6400 on the 50D which I didn't want to touch on the 40D. People compare noise at pixel level - the 50D's image is bigger than the 40D's so the noise is blown up. I haven't yet seen a comparison where the 50D's image was resized to match that of the 40D's or vice versa.

At the end of the day, its the person behind the camera that makes the big difference is what they say.

I thought that about the shutter sound....but you realise after a while that it's actually quieter and therefore better for obvious reasons. Also, once you start shooting continuously, you really feel the difference in the 2 bodies.

You can enable the full screen display on the lcd by pressing the 'Info' button at the bottom if you don't like to use the LCD.....sometimes I have it on but most of the time its off to save battery.

I'm not sure how high the ISO goes on 40D....maybe others can comment. I know it has 1600 and then a MAX option above it which could be 3200? Not sure, I never go that high anyway.

I don't use Live view much at all, but I always thought it had AF.....maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
 
The 40d is more than half the camera, so for £400 or whatever they go for they are a bargin.

However the AF is faster on the 50d, the ISO performance is much better and there is a larger range, The screen is better, even though it can be misleading.

Other than that there is very little difference. But if you have the cash then go for the 50d.
