Speed!

Like for anything moving, there should be, usually, more
room allowed in the direction of the movement.

My problem with that is one looses the interesting trail as
in this case, but the nose so close to the edge gives the
plane "nowhere to go"!

The solutions are either to capture with room ahead or, like
here, create some room in post. I kind of prefer the second
as it allows more pixels to the real subject. May I suggest…

I agree.
And I think it's a pretty good edit. But in this case I would suggest selecting the entire horizon/water area and applying a transform (stretch) instead of duplicating parts.

Right but…

Around one third was added to canvas. By experience,
I know that the suggested stretch goes fine until some
10 to 15% but not 30% +. So I went for the lesser evil!

Yes, "stretch" can get ugly. But in cases like this one, blur can be added to counter the effect if necessary... I didn't need it for this size.

…just wanted to illustrate. I did not want to
spend time… I was not fully awake at my
first cup of coffee! :)

Thank you for taking the time to comment guys it's much appreciated. I must admit I'd have edited as you guys have suggested but the image has hardly been cropped and was originally pretty close to the left hand side. Unfortunately my photoshop skills don't stretch that far to re-compose the image, I must learn :). I also thought it'd kind of work like this as it looks as though the Typhoon is accelerating out of the image?

Webby74 it was taken at the top of the cliff above the beach, on some passes the aircraft were actually level or even below the horizon. Here's an example
Typhoon FGR4 by Nick Collins, on Flickr

Very dramatic shot with the jet flames!
