Hi all , In my Widows machine I have a 250gb ssd which I use for backing up some stuff, this morning I copied and pasted my downloads folder to it which went smoothly, then I tried to copy my documents folder over to it and this failed - now the ssd drive is not showing up at all ! Anything I can do or is it a gonner ???
Thanks in advance

Do you have a caddy you could put it into and test?

Might be worth shutting down, disconnecting and reconnecting cables and then rebooting to see if it were a simple hardware issue.

Unfortunately it is the nature of SSD's to simply fail without warning, unlike 'spinning disks' that degrade slowly. Can I suggest you identify the manufacturer and visit their website as most have dedicated recovery tools.
In Windows, open Disk Management ( Right Click Windows Logo) and check drive is being identified BUT do not attempt re-format ! and DO NOT use Windows Disk repair it will simply remove all damaged sectors. If it is identified then try fitting it into a USB caddy (£10 on fleabay) and copy files.
Only other option is a specialist recovery company such as 'Ontrack' however it ain't cheap... Good Luck !

I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, turned out that it was the SATA cables, replaced them and all was OK.

Yes I would copy while you can to an extrnl drive be it even an HDD drive

So I did exactly that and its showing up again! Thanks for that - but do you think its a sign of a failure or just a blip ?

I *suspect* it was just a bad connection since it seems to have revived - pretty sure a dead SSD won't come back to life. However prudence say that you may haver got lucky 1 last time, so if there's anything vital on there you should absolutely make a copy.

Now its working I would definitely suggest downloading the manufacturers tools and checking the drive, it could be OK or it could be your one and only chance to copy data to another drive.

FWIW I have Sandisk tools that check the performance and condition of the drive(s) in this computer. Definitely worth doing as Steve says.

Thanks all for your expert advice - think I will get a new one just in case , the drive is really a back up of a backup of a backup so no panic,
The drive is a Samsung Evo - any good? Would people recommend any particular brand? I'd probably like a larger drive tbh.

Samsung are excellent - I would avoid unknown brands, but otherwise Sandisk, Crucial, Western digital, and similar known makes are all fine.

Check if it's actually still there in Disk Management.
They can sometimes simply need a drive letter reassigning.
More likely to happen with an external one though.
