I have a number of clips taken on my ixus 750 that should produce some really good stills though I don't know what sort of quality they would be.

Is there a bit of software that enables you to do this? I think they are all AVI files, my new Ixus 980 seems to take them as MOV files.

Will the quality be quite low? The new Ixus has oodles of pixels, but the most interesting films were taken on the older one in Antarctica and South Georgia.

Something like Virtual Dub or Videomach should allow you to export stills from a video. As to the quality, it should be ok, nothing good enough to print but ok for web/screen viewing.

Thanks, I'll look at those two. Good enough to share with friends by email is probably all I'm after, I rarely print anything.

Actually I just had another thought. VLC can play them back and you can capture stills from it, not quite as accurate as you wouldnt be able to skip through frame by frame but it would be easier.

They are generally quite short, so frame by frame wouldn't be a problem.

I have one of a parent feeding a penguin for instance that I thought might have good stills in it.

Alternatively you could just maximise the media player so its as big on your screen as possible, pause the clip at the required moment then press Alt & Print Screen to copy the active window then paste into Photoshop. Crop the image out of the media player and resize to suit.

It wont be fantastic, but should be more than good enough for web or email use. If you start with the media player as big as the resolution will allow you should be able to shrink the final image to the usual 800px and it shouldn't be too bad.
