Yes
Someone just told me that in the UK, companies are not allowed to use stock images on websites or for advertising, just to illustrate articles and such like.

Is this true? I can't find anything even remotely approaching helpful on this topic, just scores and scores of stock image sites.

The term 'stock' is not a legal definition categorising an image so there can be no law discriminating against their use.

I would imagine that most images used for advertising are either created for the purpose or bought from agencies.

Steve.

On some sites the submitter can restrict the use to which images will be put, maybe this is where they got that idea. Generally as far as I am aware they can be used for most purposes - mine are anyway.

All stock sites have their own licencing conditions (such as no defamatory use, RF cannot be used as logos, etc) but I have never come across a "law of the land", unless it is very obscure saying that licenced stock images cannot be used for advertising - that is what they are for
