Has to be technically perfect to pass submission. (for alamy at least)
Has to be something that people will use or want to use.
Has to be be different from the 100000000000 other stock images
Has to be free from copyrighted logos, items etc etc unless for editorial use.

Think of all the photos you see in books, magazines, adverts. Chances are they are from stock. So take images like that.

I submit to Alamy and Getty.
Sold 2 on Alamy in about a year. Both of animals, one of a chicken, and the latest last week of my ducks.
I got $70 for the last one, a print run of 10,000 copies for a book. After commission, I get about £20.

If you think it's an easy way to make money, think again.

Here are the three shots I sold. for a whopping $42.33 oh I'm sorry that is before commition, my balance is $25.30, (you need $250 before they actuly give you anything. so I doubt I ever will get any money from them)

Alamy Ref numbers
BXBFP3
BYR4MX
BXF898

Oh and if you can take images with large blank spaces people like that so they can write text on the photo.

Infact on typing this I might look into canceling my account. I don't want to be a part of the movement to cheapen photography.

EDIT: Those links should stop working soon. I have withdrawn all my images.

Stock may well make you a better photographer as the acceptance standards are high and you'll need to study the market to find niches and subjects that sell. The real stock sites don't charge you anything (if there is a charge for `membership` or whatever, it is not a real stock site), so if you have time and inclination the effort may be worth it if improving your photography is one of your ambitions.

What stock almost certainly will *not* do is make you rich.

The easiest way to find out if you are of a good enough standard, is to submit a selection of 4 images to Alamy for QC.

Read these pages very carefully, follow the instructions for submission, upload and wait a week or so too see if they are accepted. If they arent, look why, and improve on it.

But Getty have to invite you, or you have to wait a million years for them to review your submitted work. At least with Alamy you just upload when you want and it gets reviewed quickly.

The last time I did any stock work,in the days of film.

1st I had to send in 20 shots,to see if they would take me on,and you had to be a full time pro.

They did, then I had to submit so many photos a year, and then they only take it if it was shot on kodachrome 25-64 asa.

I think things have change a lot in the Digtal age :)

I guess it's swings and roundabouts. One gets you reviewed quickly and pays peanuts, the other reviews more slowly and pays you not so few peanuts.

I submitted some to Getty over a year ago and they still haven't been reviewed. Not worth the hassle IMO.
They have licensed some from flickr though.

This is a private group for newly-invited members like you! If you have questions or want to talk with other Getty Images contributors, this is the place."

I click on it and....

it should be added automatically to your groups when you become a contributor.. i'll PM so not taking the thread of topic..

It would appear I was a member, but took myself out of it when I did a group cull! Back in now, and have submitted a set for the call for mobile images. Fingers crossed!
