The twig would have been nice had it had a little more definition

just from a CROP point of view I would go this way

PROCESSING - the bg and the bird is another consideration

GENERALLY - negative space needs to be more in the direction that the bird is looking

I am giving the OP space to play with - but it is a classic 5 x 7 - using thirds - as I said GENERALLY

Dazz what they said, your images are nice and sharp but you need to give the bird space to look into, or fly into or swim into ... also it needs the minimum of space behind itself.
