What's the deal with access to the land around the stonehenge? Is it part of the NT land? I want to go there tonight to try startrails and maybe catch some of the Perseid show...

I saw animals grazing there few times so I thought maybe you can access to it?

From when I was there there were big fences around the field stonehenge is located in. Access to the field is probably only allowed when Stonehenge is open.

You can get in there, as you drive up to it, you will see a field on the right with a caravan there, instead of parking on the left, park by that field and walk all the way around the back and you can get in that way :-)

I went down a few months ago and they had 3 guards at 4:15am walking around it. So let me know how you get on?! Lol

approaching which way? A303 or A344?

hmmm.. as long as they don't mind standing outside :) otherwise I might just go to Avebury...

I would think A303 way. They were out for the hour I was there taking sunrise shots I just had to clone then out.

There is a large fence most of the way around the site with a smaller fence along the dirt track along the far edge of the field which you can get over, BUT security guards are there throughout the night and will try to remove you if you try to get close.

I just need to be reasonably close :D I think I will leave earlier to give me some time to look around a bit in the daylight...

p.s: the map in your signature for the location of crop fields is amazing!!!

Park on the Byway that intersects the A303 and the A344. You should be able to get some shots from there, even if you dont jump the fence.

Or just go to Avebury where access is a lot easier!

thanks all for the tips.. I'll give it a try.. If I get kicked out, I'll move to Avebury

I put up a thread in meeting section in case anyone wanted to join!

I just got back home and it was a very unproductive night.

From the bypass road you can jump over the fence easily to get closer to stonehenge but it was still long way away so gave up on that (I needed to get within 10-20m of it which was too close with the guards) and went to avebury. It was alright there - clear skies, full moon to light up the stones, but so much humidity. My lens kept getting condensation on it every 15 min or so which ruined any startrail attempt.

On top of that, i dont think i caught any of the meteors on camera (saw about a dozen) despite having 2 cameras facing opposite directions... And it was pretty cold :)

Somehow made it back home though... I will look at my shots tomorrow after work but dont think there will be anything intetesting.

Oh dear......... Sorry to hear that :( I have never had a problem with my lens misting up, I wonder why yours did?!

I've read tips that tell you to put those little handwarmer things ontop of your camera, which helps to combat condensation. Could try this next time?

Edit: Also, what settings were you using to try and capture them?

Never heard of that before but I am sure it's worth a shot next time Im out at night...

I was using f/4, 20s, iso 800... it was pretty bright due to the (almost) full moon.

Perhaps try using a large hood on the lens to try and combat the condense.
I have a hood from my 55-250 that fits the kit lens and so can be used to defend from some of the falling mist! :)

I managed to get out last night - first time in faaaar too long!! IT was perfect conditions and I got about an hours worth of shots before 1) one battery died and 2) I got bored!

eek!
