Just out of interest I was wondering how many of you guys still use the external storage devices such as X drive and flashtrax

with Flash memory cards now being so cheap and storage devices being rather tempramental I have now given up on them. and have a 'stack' of cards instead - even if I go on holiday for a fortnight I now have enough cards to cover me

and after having 3 devices that have all gone 'belly up' I no longer use or intend buying another
are you guys the same??
cheers Chris

I've got an external hard drive that I put all my photos on and back up on a desk top PC located 150 miles away, and multiple cards for when I'm out and about.

A friend of mine had desktop, external drive and CD back ups but when he was burgled they took both sets of back ups too incase they were worth anything - 7 years of photos lost overnight

that is one of the cruelest things i have ever heard. What an awful thing to do! to steal someones computer AND make sure they lost their work too!

I don't think being nice is top on a thieves list of priorities, bring back corporal punishment particularly sitting in stocks and having rotting food thrown at you or branding for repeat offenders

Cards may well be more reliable than a PSD, but as with all things you still need a backup. Cards have failed. Cards have been lost. Cards have been accidentally overwritten before being downloaded. Cards have been corrupted on connection to PCs. It's better to learn from other people's mistakes rather than your own.

i use NAS and when away use laptop and external drive just to be sure

looking into another NAS when i get my own place, one to stay at home and one to go with me and i can then back them up over the net connection (IP to IP) which will be good

I just got my second external harddrive. So I got 320 Gigs on my Mac, a 320G WD & a 320G Lacie. I think I am good.

I use a Western Digital MyPassport 250GB portable hard drive backed up to a Western Digital MyBook 500GB at home. This is then backed up to another PC on the home network. I've just scheduled SyncToy to backup daily at 9pm and it seems to work OK.

Not sure i follow you on the punishment issue, i am pretty sure there were still a fair few thieves around back in the days of stocks...

i do believe that is a gross lack of morals though. i dont know why people steal coz i dont myself, but to seemingly consiously deprave someone of something they have worked so hard and so long for :bang:

thats just plain messed up!

i hope your friend was okay, it just goes to show you have to be really careful, the unthinkable can happen at its really harsh!

hope your friend was okay x

I use an epson p-3000, the extra storage is good when i'm away and it also gives me opportunity to view my images and ditch a fair few of them saving me time when I get back. Not sure if I'd shell out for one now though with the price of high capacity cards !!

I have a giga vue extreme which I use when on holiday, this has an 80 gig hard drive.
I have just bought a 5bay nas drive, so there will be plenty of room for photos in the future, plus an external hd drive for back up.
I have also taken out an on-line back up subscription with mozy, Just in case I get burgled, contract a nasty virus or the house burns down......

So I think I might be covered......

Indeed, although in those days most thieves had no choice as they were starving and were stealing literally to survive. Not sure about bringing back the stocks though, but getting rid of the pointless ASBO system would be a start.

not in edinburgh or london though, unless you get a permit of course =D
