Street photography

I take 2. I use my Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L lens for portraits, it's great around the local markets and you get some really great characters there. Also I take a 17-55mm IS kit lens. I tend to use that for general, wider shots such as buildings etc.

My 70-200 works great for street stuff, keeps me just far enough away not to be too noticed.

I find myself at around 135mm most times though.

52mm f2.8

came with the camera

Canon 28-135mm...

I like this focal range alot... its good as its got that telephoto overlap into the 70+ range... I just wish it was a 24-135... that would have been perfect for me... but they dont!

I will be moving for the 24-105mm soon (when I have the money after my wedding!) and just hope I dont yern for the 105-135 part back too much... I'll keep my 28-135 for a while and see.

my new 50mm 1.4 and nothing else the, (brick), 24-70 2.8L is a bit to conspicuous not to mention heavy..

tradionaly i use a 35mm on full frame

I take my old D70s with my Nikkor 20mm 2.8 used with an R-Strap. That's all you need, though with a 20mm lens you have to get close which sometimes can be hard e.g. when your subject is on the other side of a road. The advantage of the 20mm is that you get the traditional framing and if you set to f:8 and manually focus at around 2m you'll have great front to back sharpness. I use the D70s rather than my D300 simply becuase it's smaller and more discreet and is less of a target for theft.

Have you got any of your street shots on here?

No, Luke, street photography is a relatively new project for me and my shots are mostly at a level where I know what's not working on them so I've no need for criticism. This is definitely a slow burner, more to learn the craft of spotting the opportunity rather than photographically, but I'll be venturing out in this month to take a shot I've already previsualised. If I manage to carry it off I'll post it.

Yeah and alot of it is luck, my eyes were WIDE open yesterday and I honestly think theres only a 10% chance I would have missed a classic shot, I saw opportunites but the people weren't there to match them however if we had gone a slightly different route we might have sen a few. Just the luck of the draw.

Well, there is the chance factor, but then you can put yourself in a better position to take advantage of that chance when it comes your way. That may be in having complete control of your kit, to being in the right place and the right time by spotting and patience, or even just training your eye
