How does one get inspired by looking at streets, I find them so boring can anyone tell me what to look for that would interest me!

what is it you want to photography? the people/ scene?

try looking for textures/ signs/ different angles & perspectives/ lighting

Anythong really for the 2010 week 4 project, just that my definition of "street" is a paved area in a town but having looked at the couple of posts already in this project it seems we can differ away from this slightly.

Just thought really I suppose

I'm in the same quandary! I'm not very confident photographing this sort of subject, especially when I'm on my own.

I'm racking my brain trying to think of something unusual.

I am pretty certain I know how I want to go with my street shot for this week, but some other thoughts that went through my mind before deciding included:

Getting down really low and taking a shot from the gutter to give a different perspective
A really dark, gritty, urban shot of a row of terraced houses
Street performers (except there aren't any around my way!)
A night shot with car headlight streaks
A night shot of the local High Street, for a little bit of difference

Just a few thoughts.

Bit difficult when I live in the country we don't have streets

Yep Village street but it does not have a name so therefore it is going to be "A street with no name"

Seriously.. try shooting with black & white conversion in mind. Set the colourspace to monochrome, but shoot in RAW so you can do the conversion afterwards.

If you look for shapes, textures etc. rather than a "normal" photograph, you might surprise yourself.

After doing the B&W conversion, play around with contrast etc.

I had also thought of Fleet Street etc on a monopoly board but hav'nt got one:thumbsdown:

So you don't actually live in Oxford with its' many varied streets?:)

That sounds like a plan to me!

Define street? - an area that the public may use in order to pass from one area to another using any method of transportation they please. It may also have dwellings lined along it at varying intervals.

[I made the definition up btw]

My point is, that somewhere near to you, at the end of your garden path/driveway, will be something that can be defined as a 'street' regardless of whether is urban or rural.

Having said that, I am thinking I might not even leave the house to do mine.... ;)

Just been out round Manchester for half an hour with the intention of getting out of my comfort zone and shooting people......even with my 55-200 at the max I still bottled most of it. Just keep getting the feeling that everyone's watching me and I'm not sure being in office dress was right, I think I felt even more out of place than if I just had jeans on.

Might have to re-think this and do something without people.

architecture
people
drain covers
potholes
traffic
traffic signs and other graffiti

Have a look at Dark Star's gallery on HERE or better still on FLICKR, you will see lots of ideas for street photography

Think I may have to do the shot next week TBH :(

Nattelie, sorry to hear about the problems with your wheels:shake: but could you still submit an image this week? What is your view like from your window? Is there some way you could get an image but from a different perspective, at night? B&W or saturated colour? I too am struggling with this weeks challenge albeit for much more trivial reasons than your lack of mobility. Here's hoping you are mobile soon. Iain

It doesn't have to have an actual "street" in the photo to fit the theme but I would say any public thoroughfare will do - you must have some kind of road near you?

Anyway - some other ideas that don't necessarily require a street:

Streetmap
Quality Street
Sayings e.g. "It's a two way street"
Street games / playing in the street - hopscotch (don't necessarily need children present)
Street Crime
Use songs with street in the title as inspiration e.g. "The dark end of the Street"
Same with films / books - "The demon barber of Fleet Street" (You'll need a cut throat razor for that one though) / 42nd Street / A Nightmare on Elm Street (I'm thinking you could recreate something like this quite easily http://nightmareonelmstreetfilms.com/0/1m/nightmare1dvd01.html )

You get the idea...

OR

If you do want an actual street in your picture I would say it's all about lines and finding interesting textures / making use of road markings signs etc. Look for the little details rather than the whole scene.

What about an idiom, Streets ahead. A long way in front, technologically advanced? Could you use that?

I really am going to have to pull my finger out and start a 52.

Having said that, I am thinking I might not even leave the house to do mine.... ;)

Now that's really intrigued me . . . looking forward to whatever you have in mind.

Think I may have to do the shot next week TBH :(

I hope the wheels are functioning again soon - is there nothing in the house that could work for the theme?
(I'm struggling for ideas right now too, so I'm the worst person to be offering inspiration)

That early morning snow shot of your street would have been perfect for this if it wasn't already in your 365 :bang:

I have spent most of my life avoiding streets. They have shops that SELL things to unwary folk like me!
After my onion disaster I suppose I had better try a bit harder with the street theme.

Would someone name me a famous street in London? First person to shout up gets to help with my 52 :naughty:

Charlie...I am thinking I have missed your onion distaster, i am off to have a look :D

It brought tears to my eyes.

Thanks Iain and Sarah, TBH I really want to try a long exposure on a busy street with lots of pedestrians, focusing on something or someone who isn't really moving, I think it'd be pretty cool, and I can't really do that from where I am. I live on a main road and can't really see much from sitting height out of the windows TBH, so can't do much about that either, could probably do something creative with a map or something but if I do something like that, I'll still do the other shot when I get my chair back - hopefully next week. (Gets collected for service on Thursday! *happy dance*)

That's the one I thought of too Adam and now I can't get it out of my head!

Sherlock Holmes too of course.

If that's the road (pun, sorry) that you want to go down you could try going out with a wider angle and start by taking pictures of buildings/spots that just happen to have people passing in front of them.

OK, Baker street it is, seeing as it it seems familiar [though of course, in reality its a very boring road full of shops, restaurants and loads of traffic like so many other main streets in London] Though I may throw in a bit of Carnaby Street too seeing as that was the first one mentioned ;)

Funny thing is, when I first moved to London, there are so many places you know 'of', because of monopoly of course, and television dramas or news, so its quite weird seeing those places for real and even calling them 'home' these days.

zz...wake up geof

for all you wiggles fans
