Hi. Does anyone know which Colour gels i can buy and use for a Elincrom BRX250/500 head?

Could i then put the gelled Elincrom strobe inside a softbox and make it illuminate the specified Gel colour i apply or do people attack a even larger gel infront of there softbox?

You can use any colour gels with any flash head. When used with a softbox, just fit the gelato the inner diffuser, using masking tape or clothes pegs.

Bloody phone - should read 'just fit the gel to'

Which gels do you recommend using?

Best places I have found so far are stage /film / TV suppliers. 'Stage Electrics'' is one, they post all over the country if you are not near a branch, but do a search for other suppliers. If you look on thier pages, you can order swatches of gels and diffusers for nothing and then you have samples of all the colours you can pick from. The gels are usually by Roscoe or Lee and come in pieces around 1ft by 2 feet or in much bigger rolls.

Great place, stage electrics, I probably bought my rosco gels for my par cans from them back in the day. Easy stuff to cut to size.

Not as good for walk in shopping as they once were. They had several sites around the country and big main site at Avonmouth near Bristol. In the last year or so they have split into 2 divisions and moved the walk in sales to Cribbs Causeway area, the others do not appear to still open to the public and trade under a different name now.

You used to be able to walk into the shop area at Avonmouth and take a look at the various brands of gaffer tape and other handy bits on the shelf and look at the gels and diffuser samples in a big book and check out the small rolls and just take to the counter to pay. Now you cant do any of that in the new place, not enough space for a shop and you have to get to the 'in person' sales pick up point by walking through a lorry yard. It looks very disappointing compared to the previous set up.

I think the 'sent out' orders will be fine done by phone or internet, but its a real disappointment to have scrapped the customer area. I am going to try to locate alternative firms local to me if I can, with a better in person sales viewing area, rather than just a pick up point. Shame as I really liked the firm. The people at the old place were incredibly helpful, the new building, well it just feels as if you are in the way as an in person customer now, I need to add a bit to my last order unexpectedly and they could not even price it and put it through a till without trying to find staff to call down from an upper floor. The sales people on the phone are still very helpful though. I could just put my sales through the phone and have it delivered via the post but I resent having to pay for delivery when i am in easy collecting distance, but going there in person is not longer the pleasant experience it once was. If I lived further away I doubt I would have noticed much change though.

sorry for the slow reply - at our farm with very limited internet... there is an enormous range available, personally I hardly ever use any except primary colours - red, blue, green. EBay sellers tend to offer packs, most of which will never be used, and their sizes are too small too. But full or half size sheets from roscoe or Lee. Underexposed to get rich, saturated colours, overexposed for the reverse effect. Combine 2 sheets for more colours.

Couldnt find any in amazon for example. grrr they only have ones for flash unites

Also, as I said earlier, look at the rosco and Lee filter sites. Like EBay, Amazon suits sellers who appeal to uninitiated buyers.

Give these guys a bell, not sure if they offer the same service over the phone but over the counter they do mega cheap roll ends of lee and rosco gels big enough for basic strobe reflectors. I've never had to buy a full sheet from here ever (I'm tight like that lol)

+1 on this, used them in the past and always very good.

In fact, full sheets and half sheets are a much better buy IMO - big enough to do a lot more than just fit over the end of a standard reflector, and they will last pretty much for ever, as long as you don't make the mistake of cuttimng them to fit something (which is never necessary).
