My laptop came with a load of preloaded software, no disks, I have made a recovery disk but I don’t feel very safe with just that. If my hard drive fails what then, can use the recovery disk to reload a new drive or is there some way to copy everything onto a usb drive as a mirror image to copy back to anew drive if need be

www.acronis.com has a drive imaging programme that allows a scheduled complete backup to allow a full restore 'as was'.
Acronis did have some problems about 18 months ago but the latest siftware seems to work fine and I have used it effectively for many years and it has saved my bacon at least twice.
 
Thanks for the replies. So have I got this right, mirror to usb drive if laptop drive fails fit new drive mirror back and away I go.
 
yup, create an image of the disk (i do mine through windows) and chuck it on a disk somewhere safe. if you nuke the disk then just restore the image.

i have seen a lot of imaging tools that wont let you restore onto a smaller drive even if the data will fit, just something to consider if ever going to SSD.
