Tagging photos

Now I am really bad (read I don't bother!) at tagging but I really should, especially as I put stuff up on to flickr and have been thinking about applying to alamy etc and also that light room makes it fairly easy. So, how do you tag your photos? What strategies do you use?

just put 'sex' in the title and people will find it ;)

seriously though i just put technical things like what camera, what lens, location, subject etc. i don't really go in for 'emotive' words or phrases, but on sites like alamy it might help.

if it views on flickr you're after i've found that joining groups that interest you is a good place to start

I've been using LR to tag mine - like you I never did... It's come back to bite me on the arris because I've now got to go through my catalog of 5k+ saleable ones and tag them all... It makes sense to do them via LR, because then you only have to do it once, rather than 2/3 times if you're uploading to different sites

Thanks. I am still thinking exactly what I want to achieve and the alamy thing is just an idea at present. I am not fussed by flickr views but would like to be able to look at my photos more easily. I have over 9000 on my iPad alone and those are just the best ones culled from my raws etc!

You are right. I am often too eager to sort at process them though! Time to add a little extra time into my very amateur workflow!

It's easy done... I've got 3 years worth to go through - I've done about 60 :gag:

Good luck with that! Another question, do people use hierarchical tagging?

Might do... What is it?

Sorry, it's when you nest the tags, so uk>London>Wimbledon as an example. It seems to put the tags into hierarchical groups. In the example, Wimbledon would be found in London, which is in turn in the uk. The photo is also attributed all three tags. I have been reading about it in Martin Evening's lightroom 3 book.

Ahh I understand... No I don't use them tbh - Might look into it though - Thanks

No problem. It sounds like it may be useful, even if it is just within lightroom.

There is an applescrpit for Aperture to make the keywords work as hierarchical tags

Very useful for mac owners using aperture. Anyone else with their own method?
