Taking film through the airport...will it be ruined?

Yes
Im flying out to Kiev next week to shoot a project using 6x6 medium format. I plan to bring the unprocessed films back and have them developed here in the UK.

Are there any dangers of the film being ruined by the X-ray scanners? IF so, is there any way around it?

It'll be fine. The evidence is overwhelming, X-Ray scanners have been film safe for at least 2 decades in most developed countries. You could try and get them to hand search but only the TSA (in the US) have that as an official policy towards film - the chances are it'll go through the scanner. Don't forget that a lot of film is often flown by air to distributors anyway, so it has already received its fair share of rays before you even load it.
