right, after lusting over this for about a year i've convinced the other half to let me get one, so later my D7000 and 2 lens will be up for sale.
i use my camera for taking pictures of graffiti, motorbikes and a little food. i want to do a lot more food and some more bikes, but food is top of the list.


questions i have are at the moment, i have a sigma 17-50 2.8 on the front and love it, and for the few days when i go to watch british super bikes i have the nikon 70-300mm.

i was looking at getting 24-105 with the Miii , i am looking to get a zoom as well, question is what one, are they any hidden gems i should consider??? i recon i could stretch to £1100 for the zoom, but thats the absolute max.

hahaha not really, bit passed my price range.


yes maybe a macro would be a good idea but i've mostly used just 2 lens's, and for the time being ill stay that way.

or something like 90mm TSE with an extension tube perhaps? Definitely a fast short tele prime... 24-105mm won't cut it for pro food shots

i know that, but i am sure i can make do with that until i can afford some thing better, what should i be looking at for food???

try HDEW i have had all my canon gear from them top people

if you speak to them on the phone and ask for a VAT invoice
first year of warrenty is covered by Canon UK and the other two years
by HDEW (Glasgow canon service center)

£2505 for 5diii + 24-105

would save you a few quid

Hi Lewis

Is the £1100 max for all your lenses ?

You say you love the Sigma 17-50 F2.8 - is it the focal range or F2.8 you love ?

Have you had a look at your food shots and the focal length used - have you thought about a prime lens or 2 covering this ?

The 24-105IS is a great lens to go with the 5D, but it is F4 and if you really want F2.8 and don't fancy the prime route, then the 24-70F2.8 might be worth a look at ?

With regards to the bikes, I've used very happily the 70-300IS lens, for occasional use at Motorsport and as a general telephoto lens, it's a good lens.

I'm currently selling in classifieds, if you want any more details let me know...

andy. reason i love the sigma is because of the quality of the pictures it gives me, i like the 2.8 also but how different is f2.8 on a crop and f4 on a full frame???

my very few food pictures have been taken at 50 or 40mm and at f5.6, and i am quite happy with them, i cant see my self ever getting a full lighting kit at work because we would not be allowed it in the kitchen.

the £1100 is max for the zoom, at the moment i dont want any other lens's, ill stick with those 2 an play around with them and then if i feel the need or can afford ill get a macro for the food. ill have a read about the 70-300is.

5DMK3 +100mm f2.8L is a very good combo. The photos are good but lack a bit of light.
 
I hope you don't mind but I had a quick play with one of your pictures in photoshop, not perfect by any means but I just wanted to show you that they are a pretty good starting point for further polishing. I think you just need to get your exposure nailed in camera and spend a little time processing them.

Exposure wise f2.8 is f2.8, the exposure is the same on APS-C or FF and it's faster than f4 unless your framing alters it. Other than that you'll possibly be using longer focal lengths and / or shooting at different camera to subject distances so there'll probably be implications for DoF.

There seems to be a lot of love for f4 lenses but I don't share it. If I had a standard zoom (I don't...) it'd be a f2.8 for me if at all possible.

Another thing to remember with the 5D when used with f4 lenses is that even with todays high ISO capability you may run out of light and want to use flash and that's not always possible or what you'd ideally want to do and whatever you can do with f4 lens you can do and more with a f2.8 lens so personally I'd pass on the Canon f4's and head for a f2.8.

would a tripod not eliminate the running out of light problem??????

would i not be better off getting the 24-105 and a 40 or 50mm 2.8??? they seem quite cheap.
