Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC

Welllllll..... Received my new copy this morning. Have taken a few shots in my office with it, and, on an initial inspection using the 50D's screen, we are looking at a distinct improvement. Want to have a closer look at them on my PC when I get home but right now things are looking A++++ (y)

My Nikon fit version replacement arrived from Clifton today also... couple of test shots; focused on Canon and check out the dust for clarity. Seems marginally sharper than the last one, some difference between F2.8 and 5.6, but both seem sharp. Fine tune set to +2 BTW.

Photos of my old Canon EOS5 for nostalgic reasons :crying:

Looking good Gordon.
Lets hope Nifkin has a decent copy.

What do we think chaps? Did TDP get a duff copy?

Check out these comparisons between the VC and non-VC version:

The lack of sharpness at f/2.8 in the test above looks like the issue I had with the copy I sent back. Having done a few tests this weekend, the new version is definitely improved, although when pixel peeping it is everso slightly softer at f/2.8 than at 4.5, but only a negligable amount this time...

Speaking as someone who has experienced none of the issues TDP had, yes they got a dud. My example shots speak for themselves and certainly go a way to argue against TDP's findings being 'the norm' for this lens.
In all honesty I would expect a slightly softer result at 2.8 than 4/4.5, however taking into acount that the difference is all but non-existant unless you are peeping (and even then it does not stand out) and the price of the lens, I still think it's a great bit of kit :)

I agree with you.
I think pixel peeping is a good test but in practice but only for this purpose.
Again, I find the difference in sharpness between f/4/4.5 and 2.8 to be minimal with this lens.
On the whole I've read more good opinions on the lens than I have bad reviews.
However, it does seem like Tamrons QA has fallen over with the first few batches they haver released.

I'm agreeing with you there; TDP's reviews do seem to be a little bit, well, idiosyncratic to say the least. If I were them I'd make sure I had a good copy before jumping to conclusions, although they have said they will do a more detailed review at a later stage.

here's an interesting one; although the translation from Chinese leaves a bit to be desired, it's certainly detailed and gives a better idea:

Hi All.

Just to bring this thread upto date, I got one of these at Focus on Sunday. V happy with the initial 'can't wait to try it out' shots. I have the 28-300 VC and i'm really please with that too. I don't find the 'lag' in the Tamron VC much of a problem TBH.

I'm going to be trying this out in the studio shortly - hopefully it will meet my expectations under a studio flash environment.
