Nope, sounds like dirty contacts on the lens or camera.
There are 3 versions of this lens (actually 4)
-First batch (around 2000) Made in Japan
-Second batch (several thousand), Assembled in China, these were known to have a few problems (focus accuracy, over-exposure)
-Third batch (production moved back to Japan, no more were Assembled in China after this)
The version with the Built in Motor has always ever only been Made In Japan.
I've had 4 of these lens, due to various circumstances (dropped one in a lake!), and have never had any problems with error messages etc! My first "Made in China" over-exposed due to a slow aperture, never has problems with any of the others.
