Some harsh comments in this thread. Opinions are like arse holes everyone has one. Every one's opinion will be tainted by their own experiences.

In the end all the manufacturers offer decent options, in my personal opinion and based on my experience you are more likely to get a duff Tamron lens rather than a Sigma but that is just my opinion.

However there seems to be a certain amount of users on here that would rather have petty arguments than actually discuss the merits of each in a reasonable way.

Phil, shut up. Again, you are not understanding. I have zero preference. I love Sigmas primes when they work and I love a few Tamron lenses too. I said,if anyone cares to read properly and comprehend before calling me sad or petty, that Sigma has a worse REPUTATION and this may or may not be unfounded which is another debate. It may be just a meme ( look it up) .

Stop telling people what to ****ing do! If you don't have the smarts to understand a debate don't enter it with some holier than thou attitude.

I found this amusing to be honest. Childish and idiotic perhaps but amusing all the same.

Okay, I allowed myself to get wound up and for that and calling people morons I apologise. I would ask people to read what is written properly before jumping in and name calling themselves though.

Come on guys, some of us are interested in what could be another serious option for a couple of lenses shortly:thumbs:.....looks like another sensible thread quickly turned nasty on TP:'(:cuckoo: It's happening with a lot of threads now that start off really good and rapidly head south...

Yes, it is. I apologize again for my part in it. Half awake and felt attacked.

I am sure the apology is appreciated but seriously

I've apologised.

Don't take the internet so seriously mate no body was attacking you in anyway it's all my fault anyway for the throw away comment I made about back focusing at the start of the thread.

I didn't expect the reaction that has seemed to cause.

Yes, it happens occasionally. I was a bit constipated and had a bad night with the boy. ;)

Group hug? No tongues though, I'm married.

that ruined what was possibly a good thread
I notice that you are all members of the Nikon club though lol

In relation to the 70-200 VC if it has the same or better stabiliser that's in the 70-300 VC then tamron could be on to a winner.

I only have one tamron lens with VC which is the 18-270 pzd vc and I find the VC a bit pants it tends to jump and shift the image alot

Yeah but the VC versions in the 70-300 and the new 24-70 are newly developed systems. I used to own a 70-300 vc and have yet to see a stabiliser compare to it. Check matt grangers YouTube comparisons he even thinks its better system than 70-200 vr2

Does anyone have any direct experience on the vc vs non vc 17-50? I had the latter but they're hard to come by now.

I owned the 17-50 non vc and had 2 issues with it. It doesn't meter properly with TTL-BL. Google it it's a common issue. I also had an issues with softness on the left hand side, must have had an element out of alignment or something. Was an import so tamron was having none of it. It was a very sharp lens wide open though when it hit the mark. The VC version when I tested it at my local jessops felt more robust and was bigger! I never got to pixel peep but it seemed good what I seen in store!

I think i would be more than happy to use one for hobbyist stuff but for work I'm being paid for I would be very concerned about AF missing the mark on critical shots etc.

do you think it makes a difference which mark of camera we use these third party lenses on
ie canon nikon sony pentax etc

Nikons flash metering system is different to Canons so i suspect the other variants may not have the TTL-BL issues!

As for optics, theyre identical. Resolution may make for it to be better or worse in some cases Im sure

The lens has a micro motor built into it so AF speed etc should be pretty similar, however a better camera with more cross type af points will benefit for sure

I was thinking more along the lines of do these third party lenses work better on say a 5 dmk3 than a nikon d800 or vice versa
read plenty of reviews on comparisons of lenses ie tamron v sigma v oe but they tend to be on the oe camera
not read a review where they test say a tamron v sigma on a canon a pentax a nikon a sony camera etc etc

its hard to say pal. Id imagine the lens has a fair bit to do with it due to the micro motor and electronics(how it reports distance information to and from camera etc)

Also theres a fair amount of guessing going on with all third party lens with regards to AF as they all reverse engineer the AF routines as canon and nikon don't give that info to them...

just intrigued as you here story's of this sigma was pants or this tamron is pooh but that may have been that they suite the nikon better and the moaner had a canon 7d
not really any info on this that I can find or is it a non issue and they work equally well or equally bad no matter what mark or model of body we have

The other thing that intrigues me is do the camera manufactures do some nastly little settings to their camera software to recognise this is a non genuine lens we'll just make the iq that little bit off we'll just make it hunt for focus a tad

Wow, some people on this forum would argue over the price of brown bread I bet!!

what is wrong with people? Put up a thread about 2 new lenses: people start arguing over third party manufacturers ...

It's almost as pathetic as the Samsung Galaxy Vs iPhone debates/arguments. My phone is about the least important thing in my life [it's an iphone btw, with a cracked back plate and a jammy home button]

Anyway, it'll be interested in seeing reviews for both of these lenses. And especially the pricing.

But youve just joined the debate with your post. Everybody knows brown bread is better.

Actually I created the thread ;)

White bread will kill you in the long run, all that starch!

 kettle black mutch etc.....

they charge us more for brown bread when it is much cheaper to produce
white was for the rich and the brown was for the poor in the old days
now with marketing they have turned that round for brown to be fashionable and priced accordingly

Back on topic.

Both these Lenses intrigue me but I really need to see prices.

If the 70-200 comes in at under a grand and has decent VC and AF speed I would certaily conisder it over a used, and now quite old, 70-200 VR mk 1 (or I guess the f4 IS if I was a canon man?) The sigma OS lens is now £899 UK stock so I can see this as doable after the prices settle.

The Nikon 105 micro is a shade under £600 grey and about the same over for UK stock. For the Tamron to be worth getting it would have to be not a penny over £500 and also offer at least the IQ of the old one which I understand to be excellent, but not quite as good as the Nikon. I like how it's now an IF lens too, I don't like the idea of an extending macro for close work (I don't have a dedicated macro yet but the concept puts me off)

Both are listed as weather resistant too which is a plus over the sigma options as far as I am aware. The 70-200 also looks to have the focus ring at the front I think which is more OEM style too.

If these also have full time MF (the focus ring moving in my hand bugs me) and keenly priced I think I'm probably sold.

Come on mate it was done and dusted.

But as for starch vs death I'd really like to hear about that?! :-)
