Tamron Lens fault?

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I have a Nikon D90 and a Tamron 18-270 VC macro lens which have performed reasonably well for about 15 months now. In recent weeks, I have suddenly been unable to focus and VC stops working.(at the same time) This happens nearly every time I switch on now and is intermittent and annoying.
I have seen on the web that that others have had a similar problem.
I would welcome any advice on the problem. It is out of warranty. I have also tried it on a D200 with similar result.:'(

I gave up on Tamron lenses because I found the overall IQ to be very "soft", as for the problem you describe, it sounds like either a fault with the internal circuitry of the lens, or dirty CPU contacts.

:)

You need to send it to Tamron to fix, as you seem to assertained it's the lens by trying it on two bodies. I assume you already cleaned the lens contacts on the mount?

I can't think of any advice than the obvious - send it in to be fixed:

Yep, I had a somewhat similar problem when I had the same lens on my D5000. It was as if the camera didnt see the lens....had to take it off and put it back on..annoying to say the least....put it down to compatability issue with the lens and camera because it didnt seem to do it on my D40 which I owned prior to the D5000. Sold it in the end.

If you can drum up the evidence of other lenses failing in a similar fashion you've got a good chance of quoting Sale of Goods Act and getting a replacement or refund from the dealer. If paid for by credit card, so much the better, cos you can take it up with the card issuer. Mention that Tamron USA lenses have a five year warranty (though check the facts, first).

If all else fails, Intro2020 for service. They may fix it for free, just charging for postage, but not offering any warranty.

After 15 months its unlikely if not impossible to claim under SOGA. I suspect you'll just have to pay unless someone at Tamron is in a particularly good mood.

Hmm well thats got me thinking, my 18-270 sometimes does that I have found that it seemed to happen when I have a particular battery in it. Even caused an error 50 on my Canon on one occasion. If i bring the lens back in a fraction it seems to sort itself out. I thought it was something to do with battery power so have marked that battery up. But if its the lens which mine is under warrenty do I want to send it back coz Ive got a sharp one and colours are great. Didnt realize there was a fault like that with the lenses. As to your difference of cameras and Tamron lens more than possible my Nikon D80 hates Tamron yet is fine with Sigma.

You oughta try it some time.

Tamron is in Japan. It's Intro2020 Jeff'll be dealing with if he wants UK service.

Hi,
thanks to all replies-tried new battery and seemed marginally better. Returning lens for check to Hull Jessops-it was a Jessops buy. If they confirm its faulty, I'l decide what to do then.
