Having spent all my cash on a 70-200 f2.8 VR lens i am left with not enough funds to buy the Nikon 1.7 tc i really wanted.
Need something third party if anyone can suggest, must retain AF as i am partially sighted and must be compatible with VR.

Has anyone used a Sigma or similar with good results?

Have a read
http://www.digiscoped.com/teleconverters.html

The Kenko Pro300 and sigma 1.4x TCs both have good reviews and are similar prices, around the £180/190 mark, neither company do a 1.7x TC, but there about £100 cheaper than the nikon 1.4/1.7 TC's

You can get a 1.7x TC made by Kenko, but its sold as a Soligar 1.7x.

Not used it myself but if its as good as their Pro 300 1.4 DG it'll be excellent.

Avoid the Kenko 1.5x TC or a Kenko "MC4" - these are much weaker than the Pro 300 originals or re-badges (re-badged as Jessops, Tamron, Quantaray and Soligar)

This is amazing.
I just posted this and started to look through ebay to see what was available and would you believe it just 28 miles up the road was a NIKON TC-17E11 new un-used with receipt and the seller was saying collection only.
I sent a quick message asking what he would accept and within a few mins i had a reply saying he would accept £175 cash off ebay, all he wanted was my phone number.
i have just spent 20 mins talking to the Guy, all sounds good he never used the TC and i am collecting it on Sunday
Thats made my day.

I have to say that the Nikon 1.7x on the 70-200 degrades a lens which is pretty much as good as you can get to something pretty blurgh.

I'd argue you'd get better results with the 70-300 VR....

Hmm could have saved myself a cool £1,000 if i had thought that was the case.

just been reading lots of reviews and most seem to say the 1.7 was made for the 70-200 f2.8 and with a loss of 1.5 stops it is still quiet fast and any IQ and sharpness loss is only mildy visable up to f6, there after it is pin sharp.

i will let you know on Sunday.

I've had no problems with the 1.7 on the 70-200mm. None at all.

Kev.

Clearly just me then...

You won't be getting in anyway... because it works just fine with long primes :D

The 1.7x works OK, but its definately pushing things with the 70-200 VR. Compare with and without ;)

I've got some decent shots with the combo, but its needs to be stopped down to f/6.3, and and 340mm f/6.3 its getting close to 70-300 VR territory.

Thank you PD!

I don't understand why folks on here can't see that a TC is a cheap cludge to get more length. If you appreciate what any of the f2.8 glass Nikon make for what it actually is (a superb pin sharp and FAST bit of kit) adding a TC is a bit like putting remoulds on your Porsche GT3...

Well i defy you to tell the difference between my shots using a 300mm f/2.8 with or without the 1.4x convertor because peeping at 100% i cant.

Thanks Chaps, at the end of the day having brought the 70-200 Vr on my tight budget i was left without funds to start buying another lens but still wanted to shoot some Wildlife and Birds a bit closer than the 200mm on a crop, not BIF or anything fantastic
i am not looking to win prizes or find a pin sharp image at 200mm with the TC on at F6, quiet happy to do some work on PS and as long as i am happy with the pics, thats all i care about.
I used a 1.4 extender on my Canon 70-200 f2.8 and loved the images it gave me, so if it is 80% as good as that i will be happy.
At the end of the day i will only use it now and again but it might be a better choice than a £400 Sigma something.
I will post some pics next week after i collect the Tc so you can make your own mind up
Thanks again
Tony
