Can you use a teleconverter on a Nikon D80 18-200 VR lens and do they give good results

Not a bad idea. However, beware of the foibles of the 80-400, namely slow AF.

A 300 f4 prime is worth considering instead. No zoom obviously, but mugh higher quality.

Per camerapricebuster the 80-400 is £900 and the 300 f4 is £770. Will give you £13o towards a 1.4x TC to make the 300 a 420 f5.6.
