I'm after a zoom lens for Aviation photography at Manchester Airport. Not sure what length would suit best. 250mm?

Budget probably £150 max.

Hi Marc, it would help to know what make of camera you intend using it on. A zoom lens will give you more options .

As a guide, I myself use a Canon 40d, in this instance I would recommend the Canon 55-250mm F4-5.6 zoom with IS.
It is available from www.valuebasket.com/Canon‎ for £103.00 with a 3 year warranty. On a crop camera such as my 40D it is equivalent to 80-400mm and has a 4 stop IS as well.

Take a look at the aviation pictures among this thread it will give you some idea of what is possible :-http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=459569

Sorry got a Canon 1100D. And I'd say it's 200 yards maybe less to the runway. Andmainly shots of them taking off. Also would like to do some trains also.

Maybe mountain bike shots also.

Hi Marc, 1100D is a good Camera, I had one just before the 40D and was impressed with it.
I used the 55-250mm with my first DSLR the 350D, then the 1100d and now the 40d and it still delivers ,you would be hard pushed to get anything better at the price.
It will cope with most if not all your needs, it is also lightweight so easy to carry around for long periods

If you go to this site there are loads of pictures taken with this lens, for planes start at about page 64, there are over 500 pages of pics and comments on this lens

Some cracking images with that lens. Any links to where I can buy it at the best price?

+1 on a low budget for the 55-250 or for a bit more a Tamron 18-250 (if you can find one nowdays), or a Tamron 18-270, for a bit more versatility.

I own both the Canon 55-250 and the Tamron 18-250 and the tamron is my prefered choice as a one lens solution to a lot of shooting situations where you havge a reasonable ammount of light (or you can shoot with longer exposure times).

Whichever will be best for the weather conditions here in the North west. So probably cloudy!

We do sometimes get nice Sunny weather. Not like you guys though. Will it be fast enough for handheld shots of moving planes and trains etc

The canon 55-250is really scores in the iq stakes. i had one and i was all ways impressed by it

Have to save up for one I think. Need to get to grips with the kit lens first I think.

Hi Marc

I'd recommend the Canon 55-250IS as well, my daughter has one and gets great results with it, light in weight and easy to use, available around your budget of £150 (for a UK supply) for a new one, easily within for a 2nd hand one...

Cheers Andy, was trying to remember the name of that website as I used it to find the best price for when I bought my 1100D. Really need to make time to get out and take some nice shots.
