Ok getting a 70 -200 tele lens. Question - if the lens is in auto mode can I physically zoom it in/out or do I have to put it in manual mode first? Does the former acutally do any damage to the lens? Advice please.
 
Auto mode is just for focussing, you do the actual zooming manually.
 
Thanks Mike, but do I have to move the switch on the lens to manual to zoom then back to auto to refocus? Friend had 2 zooms die this year and wondered if their technique was wrong and killing the lens.

No need to switch out of auto to zoom and rezoom. Also what is the make and model of your lens? Most 70-200 lens I've seen have FTM (Full Time Manual) which allows you to turn the focus ring regardless of the position the AF switch is in.

Hoping to get canon 7d with 70-200 f4 as one of the lenses. Big step up from point and shoot but decided this is the way I want to progress. Cannot afford Full Frame.
