how do i set my lens to telephoto, it says to in the manual but it dont say how to do it

Telephoto does have a technical meaning, but today it is generally used to describe anything significantly longer than normal focal length - in the same way as wide-angle means shorter than normal.

Normal being around 30mm on a crop format camera, so telephoto would mean anything from about 50mm upwards. Just zoom it out, assuming that you have a lens that runs longer than 50mm...

the set up is a sony a290 with a tamron 70-300

70 = short telephoto. 300 = long telephoto. The more you zoom into a picture with your lens the more of its telephoto focal length you use. You don't need to set anything just zoom in and out.
