Now that the mild weather has melted the ice,
the birds have more room to move into and I
can happily go back to environmental shots to
be used in layouts for publication later…

Superb framing with the darkness beyond.

Thanks!

The Publisher Circle is very avid of this kind of pictures that
I deliver them frequently. The second point on the brief is:
"layout ready". Of course, it is not at all a birder's shot… but
I am not a bird shooter though Birding magazines are using
more and more this kind of environmental takes.

I don't usually like dark photos,Daniel but this one has an ethereal feel about it.The swan is nicely posed too. Just seems to come together well.

Among the important elements, that all add up to produce a good
photograph, is the most important one for the image hunter I am:
the "MISE EN SCENE" where the tableau IS the shot.

It is clear that a close up portrait of a person or a bird will not be lit
the same way than the same subject in a greater space. It is pretty
much like an acteur on a theatre stage where the whole stage, and
what's in /on it, becomes a tableau, a picture.

If achieved, the result can even seduce, convince the most reluctant.

sorry but it doesn't do a thing for me .might as well take a pic of the back garden in the dark. " the emperors new clothes " syndrome springs to mind

Fair enough, Jeff, if one remembers …
The second point on the brief is: "layout ready".
That implies that the shot must have a high or low key
offering a proper contrast to the text set on the page.

I like this, it's simplicity makes it very beautiful I think!

In busy frames, there is so much that one has very little
incentives to dive in… maybe that's what it is, to dive in!

Thanks Claire! :)
