The 2011 Slimming Thread!!

Well done Sarah, I missed weigh in last week due to a family funeral. Hope to have lost this week, weigh in on Thursdays for me.
 
Hi Guys,

Just noticed this thread! Just over a month ago I made the decision like the rest of you to lose some weight. I'm quite tall (6ft4) but carrying a fair bit of weight up top.

I've tried lots of diets in the past and just gave up too easily, I thought I'd make a strong effort this time and got myself a personal trainer which I've been seeing now for the last month once per week.

Since the start of November I've lost nearly 2 stone on a strict high protein, no carb diet mixed in with weights and high intensity interval training. I go to the gym between three and five times per week depending on how badly affected I am by the delayed onset muscle soreness.

Ideally I'd like to be around 14 stone by summer of next year, I'm currently 19 at the moment!.

First of all well done to all of you for your weight loss, it a tough achievement to keep on going!

Like this idea, I lost all of my weight over 3 months through eating the right food, calorie counting and cycling unto 100 miles per week (in the end).

Christmas 2010 Weight 16st
Booked our Wedding on the 28th Jan for 21st May weight still 16st
Decided that as Wedding photo's seem to be eternal I didn't want to look like I did on them.
Ran a couple of times a week for the first month End Feb Weight 15 1/2 st
Bought a road bike in March and built up from doing 5 miles on it a day to 25 miles in just over an hour 4/5 time per week.
18th May weight 13st.

3 Stone lost through eating the right things and loads of exercise. Still holding at 13 st now and plan to lose another stone next year.

Sarah, brilliant :) I put on 1lb. over Xmas which I am thrilled with, last week was not so good as I went out three times and that was a bottle of wine each time and chocolates have been in the house. Will see the damage tomorrow.

I could do with losing a couple of stone and getting down to about 13st or so. Any hints and tips for this?

I know that portion size is my weakness - having a triple pack sarnie for lunch or 2 normal packs, or a foot long sub and crisps. At dinner too, I probably will have 120g (raw weight) of pasta, or whatever I have it will be more than I probably should have! Can then easily have a bar of chocolate or something like 10 celebrations. In and around that I may have an additional bag of crisps, bread, or general snacks like 4 biscuits. The 2 issues around this are feeling hungry and boredom. Whats the best thing to do if i feel hungry?

Exercise wise, could do more, probably bike ride about 6 miles a week, do walk a lot though so fairly active there but no gym or sepcific routine. Is walking any good?

I've heard that a 30+ minute walk, at a pace where you're very slightly out of breath and just starting to get a bit sweaty is good for fat burning.... seems to make sense but I don't know how accurate it is.

Can you put some changes in place, swap crisps for rice cake snacks, swap fruit for biscuits etc ...

Good result all in all in my opinion!

2011 didn't give me much opportunity to improve my heart health so my 2012 goals are:

-Maintain weight and reduced fat further.
-Improve cardiovascular health. Will be measuring heart-rate etc to see what I can do!

Hey guys!
Got this new free iPhone app thats called my fitness pal, it allows you to track what your eating and how much your exercising.
Basically it's a food diary that counts calories for you, you can scan in the barcodes of the foods you eat and it also has a wide library on there too! There's a range of exercises to choose from and it has helped me control what I eat and knowing that if I do eat over the suggested calorie intake I won't meet my goal. It also helps me to control my portions and stops me snacking as I feel guilty when entering it in my diary!
I think you can create a free online account too to go along with this app for those of you who don't have smart phones.
It's brilliant so I suggest you check it out

Seeing as I get married on 30th March, I decided I need to drop a few pounds.....

After Xmas I weighed around 15st 10lb which is the heaviest I've ever been!!! I'm a shade under 6ft tall and while I didn't actually look that over weight (even though good ol' BMI had me down as obese) I wasn't happy with myself and my 38" waist trousers were getting snug.

Just after new year I got a nasty stomach bug which helped me a little :LOL:

On the 10th Jan I weighed 15st 8.5lb, since then I've gone to the gym 4 times a week and made a conscious effort to eat sensibly and cut out the snacks, although I may have slightly "bad" food on the weekend as a treat. I've also started taking some supplements which are meant to aid fat loss (CLA and L Carnitine www.myprotein.co.uk for more details) and I've lost about 7lb so far.

If I can maintain that in the run up to the wedding I'll be happy, if I can lose another 5-7lb I'll be very happy :)
 
Well done both of you. I get weighed tonight. Did not go last week as I was at school for parents eveing till 7.30pm.
I am going to show a gain, I have had two full on weekends of birthdays (mine last weekend) and my daughters. Lots of wine has been consummed and cakes and meals and lunches out.
Have swam so the gain should only be 3/4lb .. well that is what I am hoping.

Back onto no booze etc now :)

So, what would people recommend as a daily calorie intake for a male on order to lose weight. An iPhone app has told me 1540 which seems low as the recommended intake is 2500 so would have thought 1800-2000 would be ideal.
 
Well I haven't updated this for a while, but my weight loss now is 2 stone 4 lbs. :D
 
I've lost half a stone since Jan 1st.. Need to buck my ideas up to get the rest of this 5 off that I want.

It really does depend on too many other factors to say definitively. 2000 is more than enough for some males but no where near enough for others. The biggest influence will be how active you are though. If you do very little during the day then you're likely to be using towards the lower end of the norm, unless you are very tall or naturally muscularly built.

Perhaps the best way is to write a food diary for a week to get a picture of what you're really eating and compare that with the speed you're gaining weight. If you just put on a small amount then you need to reduce how much you eat by just a little. If weight is piling on then it will take a more substantial change to the amount you eat and the amount you exercise.
