I threatened to buy my Mum one of those for Mother’s Day. She wasn’t impressed.
 
Reading about the new 16-35mm it is always a power zoom whether using the zoom ring or w/t ‘switch’ which is disappointing.

Yeah but most reviews says it works well and you can control the zoom speed etc from the camera. Doesn't seem too bad.
It also seems very sharp.
But yes there's distortion.

I'm sure it'll be fine, just not what I'd prefer. Reviews I've seen say there's not much difference optically from the original ‍ :thinking:
 
Something a bit different for me, shot with the 70-200mm GM II as that's all I had with me. I'm impressed with the close focussing ability of this lens, much closer than my trust Nikon VR II. Not sure how it compares to the Tamron as I never tried with that.

I read something recently that if you export your photos as .png rather than .jpg it stops that weird jpeg 'banding' that you can sometimes get, especially with blue skies. I've just tried it and it definitely seems to be better, are there any negatives using .png over .jpg?

Possible compatibility with some image viewers. I have a vague memory in the back of my head there's an issue with resizing, but for the life of me, can't remember what it was.

If you add a small amount of noise it usually fixes that.

Just been bought a couple of photography experiences for our wedding anniversary, a Birds of Prey Experience and a Kingfisher experience (finally should get to see a kingfisher), both with Yorkshire Coast Nature run by Steve Race. Very happy :banana:

Quick comparison Vs the a9 ... obviously a1 would be different and from my limited use just shooting wildlife.

FOR:

The R5 has the larger MP count for cropping, the touch screen implementation is MUCH better, the eye af for birds is also much better, inbuilt stacking is excellent for macro.

AGAINST:

Not keen that it has no real slowish fps (5/6) and hate that it has no shutter sound in electronic shutter. Canon has nothing like the 200-600mm.

Thanks, I've never ever seen a kingfisher let alone tried to shoot one yet. I go to all the places they're 'supposed to be' but never seen them. I guess I'm scaring them off and not waiting for them to return.

none of the current Sony's have inbuilt focus bracketing. they used to have it in older models with play memories apps but sony in their infinite wisdom removed that feature!

I find it odd that its 20fps or nothing on canon. I normally shoot at 10fps which is plenty for most things. Only use 15-20fps for the fastest or most active of subjects.

For me the biggest issue with electronic shutter on canon is the loss in dynamic range on R5. May be that's not an issue for everyone.
But 12fps with mechanical shutter is still very good IMO

20fps is too many for me too tbh, I keep meaning to look if you can manually choose what the frame rate it, and/or what medium and high is on the A9-II :facepalm:

Can do on A1.
My low is 5fps, med is 10fps, high is 15fps and hi+ is 20fps.
I haven't actually found the need to bump it up to 30fps. I shot at 30fps couple of times and basically found it excessive.

If you are trying to shoot kingfisher in action for example 20fps can be handy because it's near impossible to actually time their quick movements while fishing. So more frames you have more chances have of catching the right moment.

I did read once that the Rokkor is considered to be one of the best 24's ever made but I really can't see how that claim can stand up if comparing it to recent lenses. Others claim the Nikon AI is the best of the bunch. If I had to pick one as the best of that bunch it's be the Rokkor although the Nippon Kogaku is wonderfully built and can give very good results if you're careful where you point it.

At the moment I'm thinking of getting rid of my Sony 24mm and getting the small Samyang 24mm as I really do love using these little lenses.

I do like smaller lighter kit and although f1.x is always nice to have I'm happy to do without for a smaller and lighter lens.

At the moment I am thinking of getting rid of three lenses in my signature, as the Samyangs have really won me over. I would keep the FE100 FE GM 100% but might let go of the macro one too.
