Try upping your shutter speeds to rule out motion blur 1/500 is on the low side

Thanks for the suggestion but I think there must be more to it than that - I shoot at 1/500th on my RX10iv all the time and it’s generally fine for birds on a perch (eg I got a whole lot of sharp shots today with that shutter speed with the RX10). Cheers

Whilst I don't think this is your problem, things like motion blur due to slow shutter speeds often are more noticeable on larger and/or higher res sensors.

I think with modern day sensors having the ability to crop like they do it could quite easily replace a 70-200mm, but not at £4k and not if it weighs 1.3kg+ for me. That’s one thing I love about the Sony 70-200mm GM II, it’s ‘only’ a touch over a kilo

I have a 100-400 which is quite light and I find that Focal length more useful.

I use to be a fan of the 70-200 but I find the short end, not short enough and the long end not long enough if that makes sense?

Basically whenever I need to shoot above 100, 200 is not enough reach for my subject.

I also do have a 400mm 2.8 lens that I use specifically for sports.

The 100-400 is light enough to bring as a travel lens abroad!

I think it depends on whether a prime lens or a zoom is more to your liking.

As I've mentioned before, my two A65s usually wear a Sigma 10~20mm and a Tamron 16~300mm, which gives me a lot of options from seriously wide to very long, in a relatively compact outfit...

I am typically shooting events that are a couple of hours or so. I will swap weight for light in most cases. I got the 28-70 F2 recently and for Gigs I will have that on a gripped A9iii, a gripped A1 and a 70-200mm F2.8 and an A1 with 14mm F1.8. Gripped bodies on a dual harness and 14mm around my neck. For the 15-20 minutes I need them the convenience is worth it. For events that last a couple of hours I usually keep the 14mm or ultrawide zoom in a pocket or bag and carry just two bodies. 4K is a massive amount to spend though and I doubt I will be an early adopter. If it comes down to around 2.5K I may well be tempted. A second A9iii is on the cards first though as the A1iis will be a long time before they drop in price a bit. I'll have an A7Riii for sale soon to help with the A9iii purchase

I haven’t needed or wanted to use a grip since Jesus was a wee lad. Can do a wedding up to the speeches on one battery so a grip is pointless for me.

I don’t like grips as I prefer to wrap my little finger under the body, feels more secure to me too. I don’t find it any hardship turning the camera 90 degrees to shoot portrait orientation.

If you want f/1.4 then just get the GM's and be done with it.

f/1.8 or 2 will give you more options.

You could buy used? Might get next day delivery. Then if you sell it on your return it's much like renting

Personally I prefer the 35GM, but if you've got an R body or decent resolution (or don't mind lower resolution) get the 24GM and shoot in APSC for both focal lengths.

35mm GM is a lovely lens, there's something extra special how it renders.

35GM is excellent it has warmer rendering than the other G.M lenses but that’s the only downside really.

It’s the best 35 you can buy at the moment well until the new Viltrox launches anyway.

They just received the parts to fix it and will begin the process and hopefully it will be ready by next week

An update on my A7III saving to a new folder every day.

Sony sent me a list of things to try including checking various menu settings, resetting the camera, taking the battery out etc none of which worked.

Just to be sure there was nothing lens related, although I can't really see how, I thought I'd try a different lens but that didn't make any difference either.

I've replied to Sony and I'll wait for their reply but I think this is going to end in sending it in for repair.

As I said, imo the 35GM is the better all round lens. If I need wider I just shoot a panorama. I have the Riii myself, I don't use crop mode but I'm sure it'll still give enough pixels

Out of interest do you find shooting panos with the 35mm you get an parallax effect? I’ve only done panos shooting with a wide angle and the parallax effect is a PITA.

AFAIK parallax could be an issue with any focal length.
