The Amazing Sony A1/A7/A9/APS-C & Anything else welcome Mega Thread!

I was reading about that just recently when watching a video on the A7V tips and tricks and thought it was a handy feature. But it turns out to be fairly old tech and I even knew about it - but forgot! lol

It's the way DSLR work - they have the lens wide open most of the time, and only stop down to your selected aperture when you take the shot (or use a dedicated button to have the lens step down so you can see the actual DOF in the optical viewfinder - but often the image is then too dim to be useful).

Yeah it changed with mirrorless. I'm not sure if it applies to Canikon too, but one of the reasons Sony does this is to help with fast burst speeds as the iris doen't not need to keep opening and closing between shots. Also, it shows the DOF.

Am I right that you can turn the feature off that keeps the camera in whatever aperture you select mode? I seem to remember that there was an internet panic about this years ago, but I could be wrong. I can't remember what the mode is called, DoF effect mode? Something like that but I think that if turned off the camera will focus wide open and stop down to shoot. Or maybe I'm wrong?

Just a quick question...

As some may have noticed just to try something different I've been taking more panoramas in the last couple of years. I was thinking recently that I should try and stick to an aspect ratio whenever possible and whenever it suits just to give some consistency instead of my panoramas being all over the place aspect ratio wise.

I've done a few to 2.39:1 and that seems nice but of course it doesn't suite everything but having some sort of ratio at least in mind seems like a nice idea to me.

What do you lot do? Do you have a ratio in mind or just take each panorama as it comes and suits?

I tend to favour 3:1 as it stops sizes getting out of hand. I like to print (or get printed if it's a larger pano than can be comfortably accommodated on A3) where possible and the cost of framing soon mounts up.

I keep the full sized file but I also make a reduced size file for slide shows. I used to take prints to a framer but these days if I want something framing I just buy one from ASDA.

Oh, I'm not bothered about file sizes - it's the physical size. I find that shops don't keep panoramic frames.

That's what the aperture drive in AF mode does, if you set it to focus it partially opens the aperture to focus. I don't think it fully opens like DSLRs but it doesn't stay at the selected aperture

I tend to use whatever looks best for that image.

You probably wont be surprised to know that I get a bit ocd over cropping and if something like a house or tree branch is going to be cut I just have to extend the crop and leave it whole and in.

Trying to get them to look more uniform is just an idea but I don't stick to it. The last one I posted here of Whitby is just a fraction off 3:1.

65:24 the original Hasselblad X-Pan size, stops them becoming too wide for height and looking thin

Must admit I got a bit interested in swapping over to an OM3. But I have come to my senses.

I've thought of giving Oly a try as I've only had Panasonic MFT but TBH Sony FF is so much better and with the lenses I mostly use there really aren't any significant bulk or weight savings with MFT.

It is a pretty camera, and I’m a big fan of the m4/3 system, that being said I can’t ever see myself going back to it.
What happened to our mate Tommy? One too many arguments? :ROFLMAO:
I was going to ask this a couple of weeks ago, and then forgot again
I'll have to have a look back through the thread. Any idea what post number it started at.
I don’t think he said anything too out of turn on this thread, but he did ruffle a few feathers ;)

Having just moved back to Sony (Don't call me Trevor  :p ) I still have my OM5ii and some lenses. How long it will stay like that I don't know. As @woof woof says, m4/3 is getting a little too close to Sony in weight and size, at least as far as primes are concerned. And anecdotally I am finding Sony files easier to edit/get the look I want than Olympus.

He used to be f2.8, but then requested a rename to f1.2 (not to be mistaken for F1.2 who is a completely different member).
So we have an f1.2 and and F1.2? Isn't there an f1.4 that's related to Tommy?

He too was from Norn Iron. Got booted a couple of years ago - he only posted in the lounge and HT, never anything useful photographically speaking and I went back through his posts to see first.

Something must have happened while I was away on holiday..... I had just over a week free of Internet pretty much lol

He was certainly strong willed with his thoughts and opinions that's for sure. Sometimes on the offensive side too for some people. I did occasionally put him on and off or ignore from time to time :ROFLMAO: Saying that though, he did contribute some great knowledge and experience to things.

I've not seen him on here for well over a month IIRC.
