sorry i was asking advice , wrongly thought this was the thread to post on

A couple more observations on the A7riii.

You really do need to get the fastest UHS ii card you can for slot 1, especially if shooting uncompressed raw, even a 150 mb's1000x Lexar card isnt really fast enough to take full advantage of that slot, I'm going to have to get a Sony G series card I think.

Tethered shooting using a laptop with USB 3 is fast and reliable, the latest version of Sony remote works well, live view is instant with no lag when moving the camera and everything important can be controlled from the software, except that is toggling eye AF on and off, which in my opinion needs putting right with the next update.
The Sony editing side though is slow to render, even when using it on a top spec MacBook pro.

Focus is now nothing short of fantastic, even in very low light and shooting with the 50/1.8 there was not a hint of hunting, subjects locked on perfectly first time. (single 37w equivalent halogen bulb lighting the room, 2700k so very orange cast)

Talking of the light in here, the custom white balance tool in the camera corrected the WB perfectly 1st time resulting in no sign of colour cast at all and a perfectly natural looking image.

I haven't had the opportunity to shoot in daylight yet, but if the low light shooting is anything to go by this baby is going to far exceed my expectations.

Looks like my 9 month old A7r & bits will be going up for sale soon, this ones a keeper.

I have a pair of Sony SF-G SD cards, they are the fastest writing SD cards available but Sony only having a single UHS-II slot cripples things somewhat, also shooting RAW+JPEG also slows things down.
My advice is to shoot RAW to both slots. :)

Mines set to shoot raw only to slot 1 and video to slot 2

That’s even better, I believe the problem is that when you reach the upper limits of the internal buffer, the limitations of Slot 2 come into action in terms of writing speeds.
I’ve always wondered why Sony only gave these bodies a single UHS-II slot and I can only come to the conclusion that it’s heat related or another technical limitation.

To be fair, you’d have to do some serious spraying on the A9 to completely hit its limit.

It's heat related. See the tear down of the camera. There is a dedicated heatsink on the UHS-II channel

Did I miss a day? Calm down all... It's only Christmas Eve!! :D

But, anyway... Merry Christmas one and all :D

Ho-ho-ho and all that :D

Unfortunately I wont be getting anything photography related for Xmas :( When Mrs Woof Woof offered to buy me a lens I should have said "Ok" :D

I ended up with a FE100-400 G Master as my Xmas present (although I'm open to anything else Santa wants to bring). Hopefully this may bring an end to the GAS I have succumbed to throughout 2017. In fact looking back it was quite severe.

My round-up of 2017 has consisted of the following:

Sony A7rII
Sony FE 16-35 f4
Sigma ART: 35mm f1.4
Sigma MC11
Sony FE 85mm f1.8
Sony FE100-400 G Master

Edit: Forgot about the Sony FE 55mm f1.8

Stop Ajna Rucksack
Small Pro ICU
Large Pro ICU
Think Tank Digital Holster 10 v2
Think Tank Body Bag
Think Tank Speed Belt
PD Capture Clip
PD Slide Lite
Godox TT350s
Godox X1Ts
A few SD Cards and Batteries

Now by the standards of some on here this isn't actually too bad, but I daren't work out the total

Dunno what I bought in 2017, I didn't buy any cameras but I maybe did buy a few old lenses :D and one new one, the Voigtlander 40mm f1.2. The old Minolta 45mm f2 and cheap wide primes stand out too :D The Voigtlander stands out because it's an excellent modern lens and the Minolta because it's tiny, weighs so little it floats away if I don't put it in a drawer and it has surprisingly good image quality and nice bokeh. The cheap wides are good too but they make me want a wider FoV, a wider aperture and better image quality :D

For 2018 non Sony things that have caught my eye include the f1.2 Olympus MFT lenses, they look great and are getting rave reviews but they're big and expensive and it's the bigness that puts me off the most, my current MFT primes are tiny and fit nicely on my small RF style cameras.

Sony wise I could see myself buying some more designed for Sony Voigtlander lenses or even a classic 35 f2.5 or f1.4 if I see one at a reasonable price not a silly evil bay price. I might also be interested in a Sony FE 20mm f2.

Stop it with the A6000 porn will you!!!!!

You'll make me make another over the top £25 bid on evil bay...

any feed back on the sony or Samyang 35mm 2.8 guys?
read the reviews I can find but I think a few have the sony and took uo the offer park had on recently as well, so user feedback would be great

A7 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 at f2 and ISO 2,000.

This Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS is the world’s best midrange zoom. It offers spectacular optical performance as well as first-rate mechanical construction at half the price of similar lenses, and it’s smaller, lighter and has better ergonomics than the more expensive lenses. It is a superb lens at a reasonable price, a weather-resistant baby version of the huge 24-70mm f/2.8 GM.
This is a professional lens at a consumer price!"

Well, high praise indeed.

Certainly my current workflow runs in 2 different ways, dependant on where I am.

For most photography when I’m at home it is as follows:
  1. Import photos onto iMac and into LR Classic auto adding to a Collection which is set to sync with LR Mobile
  2. Carry out image selection and 90% of my editing on the iPad
  3. Finish images on iMac
  4. Export finished images to iPhoto
If I am on holiday it runs as follows:
  1. Before I go I create a folder in LR Classic and set it as the location for LRM files
  2. Create a folder in LRM and set to auto import from my iPad
  3. Whilst I away I import photos onto the iPad (you can only import to Photos) using the SD Card adaptor
  4. These are automatically added to LRM
  5. Carry out culling and start editing
  6. When I get home all the photos are in LR Classic already along with all edits
  7. Finish images on iMac
  8. Delete images from iPad and from Photos
  9. Export FInished images into Photos
Nb This also has the added benefit of giving me a backup solution whilst I am away, photos are automatically sent to my desktop machine and also save in Photos

Hi Chris,
I have just seen this and whilst I have some time off over Christmas, I am going to familiarise myself with this workflow.
Can I ask do you use iPhoto as your main source of photo catalogue? Ideally i would want to keep my edits on my iPad, but the RAWS, i wouldn't be interested in keeping on they for a cloud based storage as it would just be too expensive and memory hungry, I hope this makes sense?

Any help on how you store your photos as a whole, and which files you keep where would be great!
Thank you
Liam

Hi Liam, I use Photos as my main viewing and sharing platform so only keep finished images in here. All the Raws are kept on my macs hard drive (with backups on separate drive). If I download raws to my iPad (on holiday for example) once I’m back home and haveconfirmed therawson only hard drive I delete them from the iPad
