I don't know what the market is or wants, but the 100-400mm is much lighter than the 200-600mm so I'd have thought it still appeals. I'd be more inclined to think it's just due to age as the original 70-200mm f2.8 is cheaper than the 100-400mm grey and that was before the new 70-200mm was around, and originally retailed at a similar price.

You could be right, I am just going by how many people I know that ditched their 100-400 once the 200-600 became available and how hugely popular the 200-600 is.

When I had the choice between the 2 myself the 200-600 seemed like a no brainer. If you want a long lens you want it as long as possible 400mm isn't really that long.

very tempted to swap to nikon for it assuming there will be a Z7iii with 3D AF like in Z9.
But they still lack fast primes, UWA lenses and/or 3rd party support :(

But really amazing lens, well done Nikon on this one!

It's such a good drop from Nikon. I'd say 85% of what enjoy these days is bird photography and this looks stunning and almost in the realms of affordability vs the usual big white pricing.

Could probably afford one if I sell the A1+200-600mm and get a Z7ii+800mm but the AF in Z7ii is not so good.
And I have not done any bird or wildlife in a while, I have plans for a trip in August.
 
UPS arrived a day later than initially thought with my new 70-200mm F2.8 Mkii. First impressions are it feels great in the hand. The Tamron doesn't really feel any lighter and there is no comparison in terms of build quality. OS works really well, not that I will use it much. The Iris ring is weight and complexity I could do without but I would loved to have used it for changing iso. I can't see a way of changing its use in the A9 ii menus which is a pity. Not had a chance to properly check Image quality but it looks great on camera and it seems to do a brilliant job of focussing when zooming. I think the feature I will like best if the ability to zoom with my thumb. When you have the 400 on the monopod and are trying to catch action with the shorter lens ease of changing zoom is a big plus. The Tamron wasn't bad but the Sony is much easier. Should get a test run tonight as a local team is playing. Good service from Panamoz with order to delivery almost exactly 6 days

An interesting lens for sure and can see it appealing to the birders. My wife wasn't impressed when I bought the 70-200mm so there's no way I'd get away with a lens that price :lol: Not that I could justify it either tbh,
 
Rumours are saying the GMII will be the lightest 24-70mm f2.8 on the market, I’m really liking that they’re taking note that people don’t want heavy lenses. I’m sure it’ll have a hefty price tag though, and not a lens on my radar.
 
First outing with the 70-200mm and probably couldn't have chose a worse night. I only lasted a half as the weather was lovely when I left so never took my waterproofs. The heavens opened for about 25 minutes and I got drenched as did the new lens. I had a cover for the 400 but the 70-200 on the A9ii didn't seem to bother with the deluge. The early images I took were really sharp and focus was exceptionally quick. It was just a nice lens to use for the few bits of goalmouth action that came my way. Can't wait to use it shooting dogs as it will be brilliant I think. Here is the best shot taken with the 400 to give an idea of conditions. Not the greatest quality due to the rain and having to shoot at iso16000 a long time before the sun went down. The goal is with the 70-200 at iso25600

Eagerly awaiting the 85GM ii. Can’t believe they havent updated that one yet. I can make and drink a cup of tea by the time mine has grabbed focus :)

Definitely going to consider this, love the 24-70 range and the f4 was just a bit meh.
 
I've never noticed before but my god does the uncorrected 24-105mm have bad distortion (forgive the photo, selling some stuff on ebay)

New toy day yesterday.

Very impressed with my shopping experience with Harrisons.
Asked for a trade quote on Thursday in the early hours of the morning,
Received a generous (when compared with others) quote by early afternoon.
Emailed them to confirm I'd like to go ahead and got a prompt reply with collection arranged for Friday,
DPD collected on Friday and delivered to Harrisons on Monday and I got a confirmation from Harrisons that the goods had been received.
Tuesday morning another email to confirm everything was as I had described and a link sent to pay the balance on my new purchase.
DPD delivered my new toy yesterday in the 1 hour time slot they had advised me of.

Just wish every shopping experience could go this smoothly.

What made the difference the most to me was the email to say they had received my package. They didn't have to do this as I could have tracked it myself but they did and when you have sent £1k worth of equipment it's nice to get that confirmation.

It took minimal effort from them to do this but made enough of an impact on me that I would recommend them to others now.

Nice, enjoy. Harrison's are generally very good but their offers on used gear can be very hit and miss from my experience (y)
 
A7 and Voigtlander 35mm f1.4 go to the park. It was cold and raining a bit but I had an hours or so to kill. I was going for a soft look at f1.4 and waited for something to fly into the frame.

You sure? It's a difficult lens to part with. I read one review which said it's one of the best 50mm's ever made. I don't know about that but it is IMO a very good lens and small and compact compared to the leading edge 50's of today, but they tend to be f1.2/f1.4 which maybe explains some of the bulk. I nearly took mine with me today but went with the 35mm f1.4 instead because it's smaller.

I just don't use it at all sadly, as I have the lenses I want and need now so the 50mm can go now it comes with the original box and caps.

The ideal for me would be if Sony did a compact 50mm f1.8 with anything even approaching the quality of that Voigtlander.
