When you have 4-5 stops like many cano. Lenses it is quite a big deal. Corners are pretty noisy even with perfect exposure

Thanks. She’s a magnificent beast, formerly powering 600 looms with 300hp. Unfortunately they can only steam her once a month due to the boiler being on its last legs. Today, alas, wasn’t the day. :(
 
In another place someone is claiming that the kit doesn't matter.

I find this hard to believe unless the photography is untaxing and the photographer satisfied. Just about everything I've bought has been a step forward and even to me as just a happy snapper the kit really does matter. The glacial focus of the Fuji S602 Pro Zoom was a killer for anything moving, my Canon DSLR's had useable if iffy focus but lacked DR and showed horrible noise when I attempted to lift the shadows and then each mirrorless camera genuinely moved things on for me.

I don't work the kit as hard as some but even so some of the pictures I take now just could not have been taken with a Canon DSLR. Focusing quickly and accurately anywhere in the frame with eye or even just face detect is a real game changer plus there's the accuracy of manual focus with mirrorless and of course ever better image quality.

Even something more esoteric such as the feel in the hands can affect the end result. To misquote, happy snapper, happy snap. :p

I've never had a camera which I thought had awful ergonomics. I suppose the worst I've had were the RF's with no grip but their smaller size and lighter weight made the bar of soap styling liveable.

People who say the kit doesn’t matter talk out of their behinds, if this is true why aren’t they just taking pics with their phone. You see all kinds of nonsense regurgitated all the time such as gear doesn’t matter, proper photographers only shoot in full manual etc. These people are either clueless or ignorant imo.

I challenged someone online the other day when they said “gear doesn’t get the shot”, I said “no but it can make it easier”, to which they replied “so you need to rely on the camera to get the shot”. I think I’d put this person in the ignorant category ;)

I can tell I’m approaching 50, I’m getting more irritated by idiots online and I’m more inclined to speak my mind, I’m only a step away from Victor Meldrew :ROFLMAO:

There could well be someone who's posts we've seen who claims that kit doesn't matter and posts some of the worst pictures IQ wise I've seen on a photographic forum.

I read a piece a while ago about the first truly candid shots of politicians of the time, Googling tells me this could have been Dr. Erich Salomon. In the days pf posed pictures people were shocked. These days it's easy, even I can do it. I'm sure things will move on even further but even todays kit gets you pictures that would have been luck to get with a single shot not so long ago.

Remember what Margaret said about Victor, I think when someone who fancied her said what an awful man Victor was? She explained that his behaviour was due to him being incredibly sensitive. Once that is accepted his behaviour became understandable and IMO he was a touching character.

Some advice please.

We're off to Cornwall for ten days on Monday and I have bought a NISI 82mm Long Exposure Kit for some photos I have in mind, (estuaries) this is all new to me as my favourite Genre of photography is Birds/Wildlife.

I have been playing around with the Creators App at home and it seems to work fine on my A7RV & A7V but what is it like out in the field ? is it reliable or would I be better off getting a remote ?

I plan on using my Viltrox 16mm f1.8, Sony 20-70mm f4, Sony 35GM f1.4 and possibly 70-200mm? is there anything I need keep an eye on with using any of the mentioned lenses?

Also, I will be using step-up rings with the above lenses.

From my experience the creators app works well and I've not been let down by it, however as it's bluetooth the range isn't that great and so I just use my wireless remote instead.

I'm not sure what you mean by anything to keep an eye on with the lenses?

I've no idea what the creative app is. All I do for long exposures is set the camera to ISO 100 or whatever, set the timer to 5 seconds to let any vibrations settle after the shutter has been pressed, focus, put the camera in manual focus so that focus wont be affected when I press the shutter button again, fit the filter, check the exposure time and adjust the ISO if required, then press the shutter button and wait before looking either disappointed or pleased,

It's a Sony App for controlling your camera. It's free to download from the App Store.

We stay a couples of miles out of Wadebridge/Padstow area. We stay at the Retallack Resort in one of their Barns. It's our third visit this year. We are then going to Hawkchurch Resort in November and New Year which is just outside Lyme Regis. Would that area be closer for you?

The usual things with lens, Distortion, CA, Vignetting etc... I should have made myself more clear. My main concern would have been the Viltrox 16mm

We went to Crantock in the summer, we've been there before too, and it's a nice little area along that coast. We were hoping to try the Polperro area, but might go somewhere more "autumn" based seeing as it'll be October.

Nothing to worry about with the 20-70mm and 35mm f1.4GM in that regards, although I always have corrections set to auto in camera and in lightroom. Which 70-200mm do you have?

I'm waiting for the 28mm G but I might just carry on with the 24mm G.

If the rumor guy is right about the upcoming lenses we're still also waiting for the rumoured 40mm G.

Remember the a7v and a7rv would need different remotes if you by a wired one.
It seems near impossible to get anything bar a a simple shutter release.
I’ve not looked recently but couldn’t even find a wireless intervalometer that worked with the a7v

A bit pricey but I might give it a go.
 
Yeah lack of simple remote that did what I want is why I made an app ( for my watch) that just gives me a remote shutter button on my watch, that just auto connects, no setup etc after the first time, I never released it though, was just meeting my needs. My original use case was long exposures too.

There might be intervalometer apps? It’d be easy to do (and the newer cameras have built in intervalometer settings right?)

I didn’t realise they were different connections. I have this one (wireless) that’s worked with some of my Sonys, I think the A9 II, A7RIV, A7RV, and A1, at least I can’t remember having different ones for them, but then my memory’s shocking. I’ll have to check compatibility with the A1 II :thinking:
