Evening All,

After reading a thread on here, i thought i'd ask around and find out what people find the best piece of software is to copy files from one drive to another.

i.e. i have all of my files stored on 2 separate external hard drives, how can i create a mirrored copy of one to make sure have two drives with identical data on them?

What do you all use to backup your machines/files?

Ideally, needs to be a freebie and for PC. :)

Also interested in seeing what answers this thread develops, I usually do it manually but I keep forgetting recently and the software that comes with my external drives is crap.

Vishal, might be worth mentioning whether you're interested in software for PC, Mac or Linux in your post ;)

Memeo Autobackup for me because it doesnt rely on me to backup, it automatically backs up as i save files and if i turn it off half way through a backup then it just carries on when i turn it back on, does cost money though, its not a freebie :)

I use filesync. http://www.fileware.com/
very good and does what it says i.e. it synchronizes 2 directories / drives.

I use this to backup / copy my photos from my computer to 2 seperate backup disks ( 1 kept at home and 1 that goes off sire with me just in case some low life breaks in and nicks everything !!)

I also have used snapshot http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/ which takes an image of a disk and stores it as a series of files which can be rebuilt into a drive say if you lost your main disk. It works a bit like Norton Ghost. You can also open the snapshot on any computer with snapshot installed and it opens like a virtual drive so you can extract individual files if you need to without loading the whole drive again.

Works as a good backup program.

Is that similar to Western Digital's Anywhere Backup? It's also made by Memeo but it's a load of tosh! Every few months I have to recover my backup locations because it says they're lost and I have to start over which is why I end up doing it myself. I've not used other Memeo products so I don't know if they're the same?

I use Idlebackup.
http://www.idlebackup.nl/

Note, there's a subtle terminological difference between "File Backup" and "File Replication". Also whatever you go for in the end, TEST THE RESTORE.

A backup is useless if you can't restore from it, as many, many people discover to their loss :)

never had any issues tbh, ive not had any messages actually, all i have seen is the logo in the taskbar indicating it is working, but i do go into the drive and can see all the files backed up and i have opened them so it is working fine, good thing to is it keeps the file structure so its easy to navigate the backup as if it were the original

Microsoft synctoy here.

Don't like auto backups, they delete things I sometimes want to keep when I have a brain fart and change something I don't waant to :D

1st post edited! ;)

hmmmmm, loads of bits to look into......

I only have 2 copies of everything.....is that enough?:thinking::thinking:

p.s. i'd rather have manual backups as i dont always have my external HDD's plugged in.....

Handy backup can do a full or incremental backup on a schedule either daily like I do or weekly or whatever. It's not free but very reliable and well worth a look

Maxblast or Discwizard are cut down versions of Acronis True Image and will create and restore disc images and are free (although you need a Maxtor or Seagate HD in your system).

check that your synctoy is actually working. i found that it relies wholly on the database it builds up and not what is actually on disk. if you remove something it thinks is there, it won't sync it back. i stopped using it because of this.

allway sync works but I'm gonna try syncback because allway's UI blows and there is a limit on how much data you can sync before it starts restricting you.
