So why did we pay to keep this guy alive for 35 years?

5 years for further evidence (no special treatment) then kill them.

on a completely different note - I see he died of MND - I know someone with this terrible disease and I think he should have been released as soon as he'd been diagnosed - left to deal with MND on the outside would indeed be the worst punishment anyone could ever suffer - this is due to our appalling social and community care as well as cut backs for disability living etc etc (not to mention the effects of the disease itself)
