Today, the final class of the week was about directing a session.

All five of the students in studio with me had to take ten shots of
an other and direct the subject to come to a good result as the
others were assistants.

I noticed that they were not taking the exercise seriously — too
many grimaces and other monkey stuff.

So I selected the shyest, dressed him with an old lab coat and sug-
gested he kept his fetish sticks… I took 2 takes and this is #2…

Nice black background - I've yet to understand how to do that without cutting the subject out. Did you simply use a flash a certain way to achieve this?

Possibly more simply than the opposite, a white BG. The inverse
square law helps in this. The BG is an anthracite paper some 3m
behind the subject and the light sources are kept close to model.

I don't wish to sound pedantic but I believe it is the inverse square law that is being referred to. :)

I don't mind you being so as I am more irritated by the darn
auto-correct feature that caused this I think… thanks! :cool::D

Thanks Jeff!

After demonstrating that directing a shoot means taking control of it,
— even the shyest guy quickly and happily executed the wanted pose
feeling more secure with the given instructions than in an improvisation.

Yep, some of them are quite funny indeed but this is always symbolic
imagery. A similar approach may be taken with politicians, lawyers, girls,
sports, cops etc.
