The General Drone-Related Thread

FINALLY!!
Just bought a DJI Mini 3 PRO + RC Controller - £699 from Currys
Tried to fly it round the back of the house but we are in a No Authorization zone.
By the time I figured out how to get past this it was time to pick the Grandkids up from nursery  :$
Hopefully I'll get to fly soon
When you say get past it, have you unlocked the zone or just gone somewhere else?

Just curious if anyone has been successful in taking a drone (Small A1 class) to East Africa.

We've just booked Gorilla trekking in Uganda and a Safari camp in Kenya. Though it is looking unlikely given the bureaucracy of Uganda even to get the Drone through customs, just wanted to see if there were any successful applicants here.

Thank you!

Moved to the drone thread, you may get a better response in here :)

This is my latest video. Was driving though a few weeks ago and the light was pretty good so as soon as I got home I grabbed my drone and headed back so see what I could capture.

No real purpose or story behind the video, just some good practice.

Trying to put a bit more effort into the editing and not uploading it the moment it is done, so have sat on it a week and come back and made a few improvements along the way. Also trying out putting on some sound effects, but keeping g them subtle and not sounding gimmicky is a challenge.

Similar to above im just starting with mine and haven’t shot much video at all.

But for me the Video is well shot, only critique would be for me the blacks are abit too crushed.

Very nice Dave.

I've left a comment on the YouTube video.

Can't give any CC as I'm a beginner myself.

Terry.
Thanks Terry, and have also responded to you comment on YouTube. (y)

Thank you. Yes that is something I am not too happy about, it's a little too contrasty I think.

I tried to lighten the shaddows but it seemed to introduce too much noise so this is where I settled.

But I think I might know how to correct it in the future. This was actually the first flight with my replacement drone and I didn't think to change all my video settings to what I had with the previous one, so I wasn't shooting in D-cinelike. If I were I think that would have retained more shadow detail and allowed me to pull them back more. Lesson learned.

Not used the Mini 2 for quite a while now!

Had a pub car meet last weekend and as the Escort wasn't on the road (you don't want to know the list of fixing I've done the past month!!) I went with my mate in his Mondeo V6 Ghia X - we did actually go back to my lock up afterwards and bleed the Escort brakes so I've one little job left to do there!

Anyway, this wasn't as easy as I thought it would be!

Loved the tracking m8, great stuff.

Paul.

Nice.

It shows that you don't have to shoot straight up to 400 feet all the time to get decent footage/photographs :)

Thanks Robert. A lot of the time I am way below the 120 metre ceiling, somehow I just prefer the closer views...

Skippool Creek - and what once was...the MFV Good Hope...

Skippool was once a bustling port on the River Wyre, close to the Fleetwood estuary, where ships unload their cargoes. Its popularity fell out of favour when Fleetwood’s port opened in the 1840s. A number of businesses were situated alongside the river to benefit from this trade, including Silcock’s Bone Mill and Tomlinson’s Animal Feeds Warehouse.

There was also a small shop that sold tea and sugar to the boatmen. During this time Skippool was a popular site for cock fighting, smuggling and press gangs, and the Ale Houses were infamous for their strong ale, contraband, spirits and drunken mariners.

The main feature in my video is (was) the MFV Good Hope, a once proud trawler which was first launched in 1948 from Wick. Decommissioned around 1984 before being bought, was brought to Skippool creek with a view to restore it. Sadly the trawler is now in an advanced state of decay with the wood rotted throughout and totally unsafe to board.

I have been wanting to try creating a video to a brief, rather than my usual approach of turning up to a location and taking what I can get. Like commercial work, but without getting paid.

The idea I came up with was to travel the length of the river Crouch, well from Hullbridge to Wallasea Island, which according to maps should be doable as there is a continuous path along the flood defences. My plan was was to travel this path, which worked out to about 32km by bike, and stop off at points along the way to document the different locations and changes in scenery, and adding in a bit of active tracking along the way to show the journey.

Due to time constraints and part of the route being impassable it ended up taking two days, fortunately with very similar weather and starting the second day within half hour of the time I ended the first day, so maintaining consistent lighting throughout and giving the impression of a single journey.

All in all with the journeys to and from the start and end points I ended up covering 72km, but I think it was worth it.

Very nice :) What drone is that using?

Cool. I did almost go for that one when I bought mine last year but I wasn't sure if I'd use it much so went for a used Mini 2! I've just got the Maven App (beta for Android) so that nicely opens up a few more features to try.
Always sensible to start second hand when trying something new.

Now the mini 4 is out, but it's not the camera you have but how you use it. That's what my wife says when I suggest upgrading anyway, I am sure she isn't trying to imply anything else.

I fancy the M4P for the advantage of having the new RC for better connection, and for freeing up my phone.

Need to sell the M3P first though...
I'll be waiting for the m5p at least before I upgrade. If I was buying a first drone now I would definately go for the 4, sideways obstacle avoidance is great, especially for a new user. But as an upgrade I just want to see a better camera.

well as we cant legally fly over 120m anyway, having a software hard limit shouldn't really be a issue. I do agree having side obstacle avoidance is great especially as thats how I crashed and lost a drone after crashing into trees over a river sidewise ( had the camera on zoom in by mistake ) lol. but apart from that I cant really see anything to make me run off and upgrade from my m3p

120m from the ground below not 120m from take of point..This is 120m from take of point so if you’re flying up hill it won’t go up past 120m, you would have to land move to that point and restart flying from that point..

I agree it’s likely not an issue for most but something that should be considered

Are any of you guys using the DJI Assistant 2 app?
I’m not at the moment, I wondered if it is worth installing and using?

I usually use my own camera do make professional videos using a drone. I started recently but my main issue is pre config everything in order to avoid issue when I launch into flight.

This was my first visit to the Lake District and was so blown away by the views that I am already planning a return trip next year. There is no scenery anything like this down south!

We wanted to try and get up at least one summit but with only limited time, wet weather drawing in and two young children in tow, an all day climb wasn't going to happen. So to make the most of our time we decided to drive the Kirkstone Pass, the highest road in the Lake District (or so google told me) and see what we could do from there.

From the Kirkstone Pass car park we took the main footpath to start climbing Red Screes, following the stone stepped path. We went as far as we could, but the peaks were engulfed in cloud and the pathway wet and slippery, but the kids did great. We will be back next year for sure to conquer a summit!

Due to the low cloud I didn't get quite the range of shots I hoped for, so the video is quite short. Bust compensated by going quite moody with the colour grading.

I only used it for updating the controller and the drone plus I think it has some functions for calibrating the vision sensors. I'm not aware of it doing much else apart from that so I wouldn't install it unless you're needing a specific function it has plus I think last time I used it, there was some issue with Windows detecting as malware I had to work around.

I've had my Mini 3 Pro for well over a year and have messed around with the photo settings from one end to the other, as well as leaving it in auto and just letting it find its own settings for the Raw files.

Out of all the thousands of pics taken, I find most to be lacking sharpness and having a definite vignette on them.

For me, the camera'a performance on the cheaper Mini 2 was more of a wow factor than the supposedly better camera on the Mini 3 Pro. It's got to the point where I'm not that fussed with taking it out and I'm looking for an Air 2S or Air 3 to continue my photography journey.

Anyone else (using it for photographs) not that impressed with the camera?

I was a bit disappointed at first. I use the M3P and have no experience of any others so can't compare, but coming from photography background having used canon DSLRs almost exclusively with L glass, and then moving on to Fuji mirrorless did at first find the drop in image quality a little frustrating.

But I have to remember to keep telling myself that the camera on the M3P is much closer to what I have in my mobile phone that it is to any real camera, and the cost is tiny compared to what I would spend on a "real" camera.

Since getting mine I have found I am doing much more video which is something that I had not been particularly interested in before, and less time taking stills and for that I am still suitably impressed.

I finally purchased a Mini 3 Pro (5 weeks before the Mini 4 Pro was announced )
I've enjoyed flying it but could never get images and videos out of the drone.
Turns out I had been sold a faulty SD Card!!
Not long back from a couple of weeks in the Scottish Highlands and Glencoe where I found it near impossible to get a new card.
Managed to get a fairly slow card in Aviemore but at least it worked despite getting the slow SD card warning on the RC.
Here is a shot I took near Glencoe village where the River Coe flows into Loch Leven.
