Yes
Last week I sent a 100-400L lens off to Canon for repair. I just received the estimate back from them. I suspected it might be expensive, but to say I was surprised is something of an understatement...

The following repairs and spare parts are necessary because of the located defects:

Cleaning: Body(parts)
Repair: Body(parts)
Adjustment: Body(parts)
Replacement: Zoom system
Replacement: Range unit
Replacement: Lens system
Replacement: AF-System
Professional/CPS-Service
Replacement: Fixed barrel

FOCUS RING UNIT
BARREL ASS'Y, FIXED
LENS ASS'Y, 4TH GROUP
LENS ASS'Y, 5TH GROUP
LENS ASS'Y, 3RD GROUP
LENS ASS'Y, 6TH GROUP
LENS ASS'Y, 1ST GROUP
FPC ASS'Y, SUB
EXTENSION GUIDE, FOCUS
BARREL, ZOOMING
BARREL, 4TH LENS CAM
BARREL, FOCUS
LENS ASS'Y, IMAGE STABILI
FPC ASS'Y, MAIN

The total bill ..... £1,233.70. Ouch! They were at least good enough to suggest that it was "not economical to repair".

Can anyone beat that figure?

What happened to it? Did it just come back from a rental like that, or is it something that has built up over time?

Wowzers.
Folly decent of them to suggest it was beyond economical repair!

Seawater? Fire Damage?

Where's that video/pics of the lens getting dropped into water when you need it.

You should have used a UV filter as they have magical protection properties, so I'm told ;)

I assume Insurance would cover a write-off?

I've still got the broom I had when I were a lad
it's had 3 new heads and 4 new handles

what on earth happened to the lens to get it into that state?

Im not surprised at that price, i remember reading in a mcn(motorbike paper) a while ago, a brand new bike was bout 3500, but to buy all the parts and make one was bout 18,000!!

would like to know which cliff the customer dropped it over though:)

Iv'e got 2 wooden legs but managed to keep my original feet 9-)

That's a ridiculous quote. It sounds like the technician has guessed at every thing it might need to repair the lens. I would think that an independant service centre would give you a more accurate estimate.

That's insane. I'd be interested to hear how any lens got that ****ed up!

I'm pleased to say, no I can't beat that.

How old was the lens and had you been photographing sandstorms or something. :-)

That's what happens when you have one of those silly push pull zooms, it's sucked up a small child and the resulting blockage has fubar'd the internals.

At that price I hope mine never fails or I might end up having to stand much closer to things that I'm taking a picture of! Human zooming might catch on. :)

so, any answer what they have done with it

How large a truck did they drive over it?

Or is it just 'cos it was shipped by TNT (no wait, that's the same difference!)

cmon stewart let us know what happened?
