I have a 70 - 200 NIKON VR and I have been looking for a TC 17 OR 14 MK 2 teleconverter for a little extra focal length for wildlife shots....

I feel I need this after a sparrow hawk intercepted a pigeon in my garden and I did not have enough reach to get some of the shots I wanted....

Now the question is what will the series 3 converters give me the series 2 will not and are they compatible with my VR 1 series nikon lens?

:)

Well if its anything like the new 2 x converter, you will get sharper shots. Thats my opinion anyway after owning both.
Folk will now come out of the woodwork counter claiming that. But all I'm interested in is the results of real world shooting that I have had. Not charts.
I know Andy (puddleduck) is going to do a side by side test on them though. I'm sending mine to him to use when he is ready to do it. You may want to wait and see the results.
They are compatible with the vr1 system. Here is a couple os shots with my 300mm 2.8 and 2 x converter III. Thats 600mm handheld.

2 X converter III

See what you think...

Thanks, I've not forgotten about this - my 300mm f/2.8 is in for servicing, as soon as its back, its game on. May get it back tomorrow..

I've also got a D300 to test on as well rather than D60 so I can do M-Up.

Thats great Andy. I'm away on holiday in Cornwall until 9th April from friday ( a week on Monday). Will it wait until my return?

kens guide is good

http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/tc.htm

so there is realy ownley 2 versions of the 2x and one of the 1.4 only

the 1.7 is called mark 2 but there is only one af version of it

Kev - that Hawk is  hand held - I will look forward to a back to back - Until then I have had no luck in finding a stockist of the V3 offerings in stock where did you get yours:thumbs:

Thanks for all the other replies too:thumbs:

Donna - nice shot indeed - whats the lens used with the TC in that instance - I have a 70 - 200 f2.8, and was looking at the 1.4 or the 1.7 TC have been warned against the 2x But that was the series 2 offering...........

this post on nikon cafe demonstrates just what the original tcx2 can do

the pictures speak for themselves they are top draw, clear and sharp.

his technique makes sense i cant wait to try it.you cant expect a tc that lets in half the light of another tc to work in the same conditions.

its horses for courses....

in the end i think its choosing the right tool for the job and haveing the skills to use it

http://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=264861

ps hes useing it on a 600vr

straycat - Can you explain the technique - I cant get on the Nikon Cafe:thumbs:

I understand this - But in the context of the new versions do you mean - I guess I need to read the post on the link........

there is only one mk3 the 2X

i think the point is if you can get your photograph with the 1.4 it will be easier than any 2x

the new 2x has loads of great revues, but there is nothing to wrong with the original if used correctly.

you realy should see this chaps results.

same as i have both the d and g 50mm i keep reading one is better at this our that, but both seem good to me hence i cant make up my mind which to sell. :)

ps i will ask him if i can copy his text dont want to break any rules.

i have asked him in a pm but you need to see the photos they are that good.

anyone nikon should join nikon cafe its free and loads of good ideas and advice.

I had a look and the samples do seem excellent from the TC-20E over at NC.

jason has given me permission to copy his text byb means back yard birds!

the pictures on nikon cafe back up what he says.

600VR, 2x TC (VII) BYB bird tests

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Been playing around with the "old" 2x TC VII that my good buddy Tim O. let me play with. I have used it a few times in the past but wanted to try it on small subjects that move around alot. Yesterday, I had about an hour or so to kill so I went out into the yard and got some test shots in.

Folks...for all the talk trashing this verison of the 2x TC, I just don't understand it. I am not one that believes in huge sample variation, but I guess that could be a factor. Anyway...I wanted to test this combo on close subjects as well as some farther away subjects where I had to crop in quite a bit. I also wanted to shoot stopped down as well as wide open. All the convential talk is the 2x is not sharp at all when shot wide open, folks...I am not one of those people. When I did my part on achieving proper LL Technique, the combo performed as it should.

The only negative I can offer or say, is that AF speed does take a hit on f/4 glass. However, it did not take me long to figure out a way to help this factor. It has been my experience, from testing, that if your set up, waiting for a subject to appear, and that subject could appear at several different distances, etc...it is best to focus on an object just outside the FARTHEST expected location. The combo will focus much quicker when reaquriing focus on subjects closer than it was previous focused at. If you go the other way is when you have issues with AF hunting. The elements will go in, then out...slowly and more often than not, you will miss the shot if the subject is moving. So with all the said, here are a few shots to show some results.

D300s, 600VR, 2x TC (v2), f/11, ISO 640, 1/800th SS, +.3EV, 60% crop

there is only one mk3 the 2X

Only just worked this out for myself:|

Again all thanks
